About the Item
Flowers For Mickey #4, 2007
Allison Schulnik’s (American, b. 1978) strange, agitated paintings reflect her background in animation, but privilege the sculptural aspect of paint through their densely impastoed surfaces. Her gothic, figurative works, such as a bizarre and mesmeric still-life with flowers – a classic symbol of the fleetingness of life – suggest the more sinister and foreboding aspects of contemporary life.
Drawing upon divergent renditions of the same fable, The Little Mermaid (as presented in its original incarnation by Hans Christian Anderson, and its jovial Disney counterpart) notably serves as influence upon Schulnik's work from this series from Salty Air.
Schulnik candidly portrays elements of the contrasting versions as an allusion to the irreconcilability of seafaring life, her mermaids and sailors personifying the vulnerability inherent to want. The sailor is free from society, but privy to isolation, while the mermaid shares a discordant existence between acceptance and solitude. Further modeled upon autobiographical figures and experiences, Schulnik's pensive characters exude a muted nostalgia, at once otherworldly in their awkwardness, yet eerily familiar in their strife. As James Ensor paints the grotesque surrealism of the human condition, Schulnik confronts the theatricality of being, her heavily impastoed canvases forging dramatic terrains both sinister and endearing. Her tactile backdrops prompt us to navigate the uncharted mindscape of her creatures and misfits, and deliver an allegorical odyssey equivalent to our own.

About artist: Creatures real and imagined populate Allison Schulnik’s thickly impastoed oil paintings, haunting animations, and ceramic and bronze sculptures; these artworks alternately embrace farce, fantasy, explicit sexuality, and a sense of the macabre. Schulnik’s recurring cast of characters includes haunting hobo clowns, hissing monkeys, nightmarish centaurettes, alien-like figures, and an endless variety of cats and canines. Her subjects often inhabit dark, fecund landscapes or ominous, ambiguous backgrounds. Schulnik rejects narrative in favor of capturing movement, gesture, and feeling. She started making animated films as a teenager and later received her BFA in experimental animation from California Institute of the Arts. Schulnik’s work has been exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Madrid, London, Berlin, Brussels, Montreal, and beyond, and has been acquired for the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, and the Santa Barbara Art Museum, among other institutions.
