Kept a studio at 31 Coenties Slip, formerly Fred Mitchell’s art workshop, overlooking the
East River and the Brooklyn Bridge, between Wall Street and the Battery. A number of important artists have studios on the Slip: Ellsworth Kelly at 3-5, Jack Youngerman and his wife Delphine Seyrig the actress at 27, Leonore Tawney, the weaver at 27, Agnes Martin also at 27 and 3-5, John Kloss the designer at 3-5, Alvin Dickstein at 25. Cy Twombly paints his last show at the Stable Gallery in Robert Indiana studio at 31, and Gerald Laing paints his first American works in Indiana’s next building at 25.
The Stable Gallery, originally located on West 58th Street in New York City, was founded in 1953 by Eleanor Ward. The Stable Gallery hosted early solo New York exhibitions for artists including Robert Indiana and Andy Warhol. Eleanor Ward had received much encouragement for her gallery from important figures such as Christian Dior, and by the mid 1950s the Stable Gallery would begin to annually host a homage exhibit to the “9th Street Art Exhibition” of 1951 where Ward would bring forth notable Abstract Expressionist artists including Willem de Kooning, Phillip Guston, Varujan Boghosian, Howard Kanovitz, Franz Kline, Nicolas Carone, Knox Martin, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, Ad Reinhardt, Fritz Bultman, and Jack Tworkov to exhibit. The Stable Annuals represented what came to be known as the New York School abstract expressionists of the 1950s.
However, the first and second generation Abstract Expressionist artists began to go in their own directions, and new art movements in 1960s including Pop art would become more currently fashionable. In light of those developments Ward expanded the gallery beyond having only a permanent stable of artists, and began bringing forth artists of various movements to exhibit, including: Joseph Cornell, Varujan Boghosian, Edward Dugmore, John Ferren, Ian Hornak, Alex Katz, Lowell Nesbitt, Conrad Marca-Relli, Edward Dugmore, Marisol Escobar, Joan Mitchell, Isamu Noguchi, Larry Rivers, Richard Stankiewicz, Cy Twombly, Jack Tworkov, Will Insley, and Wilfred Zogbaum. The Stable Gallery organized Andy Warhol’s first one-man show in November 1962, after Leo Castelli turned him down

Ces McCully (born 1982, Melbourne, Australia)
Now based in Southern France, Ces McCully is a contemporary Australian artist, whose work is collected and shown internationally.
Rachael McCully's oeuvre includes text based pieces which utilize chance in color relationships, and abstract geometric paintings which often have a meditative effect; both sharing autobiographical elements with a reflection on society, and a minimalist approach. "I dabbled in painting, photography, writing and design over the years," before settling more firmly on painting. Feminist icons Cindy Sherman and Barbara Kruger were amongst her inspirations as she began studying art. However now Rachael McCully-Kerwick is forging her own visual language in the south of France.
Ces McCully explores themes of female relationships and identity through minimalistic forms, geometric compositions and repeated tribal motifs. Her work, which moves between text pieces and abstract painting, is collected and shown internationally. In McCully’s typography works, she uses vivid colours to create stylised and geometric typographical pieces, divulging secret, and often brutally honest thoughts. Muted-color, cloth-like ‘Patchwork’; geometric and linear works including ‘Mono’ and ‘Shape’; and three-dimensional Cubes with bold colors which brighten up the space.
More recently however, we have seen McCully embrace the folk art like characteristics of her work, incorporating religious iconography and human figures into her paintings.
Her works are held in private collections internationally and has been shown within Europe and Australia. Mccully has had her work on display in the Louis Vuitton flagship store, Sydney CBD.

Paul Henry Brach, (born March 13, 1924 in New York City - d.November 16, 2007 in Easthampton, New York) was an American abstract painter and a lecturer and educator.
As an abstract painter Paul Brach exhibited his work in New York with the Leo Castelli Gallery, the Cordier & Eckstrom Gallery, and with the André Emmerich Gallery and then later with Flomenhaft Gallery. Paul Brach's estate is represented exclusively by Eric Firestone Gallery.
Paul Brach was born in New York City and was raised in Brooklyn and the Bronx. He went to the University of Iowa where he studied painting with Grant Wood. He served in the US Army during World War II. After the war, he finished school in Iowa on the GI Bill. At the University of Iowa he met the artist Miriam Schapiro and in 1946 they married. By 1951 they moved back to New York City and befriended many of the artists in the downtown Abstract expressionist New York School, including Joan Mitchell, Larry Rivers, Knox Martin and Michael Goldberg. He was associated with the New York print studio Atelier 17 (Stanley Hayter) During the early 1960s Brach had part-time teaching jobs at The New School, Cooper Union, The Parsons School of Design and Cornell University's New York City Program.
In 1967 Brach and his wife Miriam Schapiro moved to Southern California. He became the Dean of the CalArts program in Los Angeles in 1969. As dean of the School of Art at the California Institute from 1969 to 1975, Mr. Brach hired John Baldessari, Allan Kaprow and the critic Max Kozloff, among
others. He helped to create a freewheeling experimental atmosphere out of which emerged artists like David Salle, Eric Fischl, Barbara Bloom...

Specifically Nowhere, Yellow (Abstract Geometric Painting with Grids on Yellow)
By Donise English
Located in Hudson, NY
Large abstract geometric painting with intricate line work in pencil and gouache on a bright yellow background
"Specifically, Nowhere (Yellow)" made by Hudson Valley artist, Donise English, in 2022
gouache, acrylic, pencil, and colored pencil on paper, mounted on panel
48 x 48 inches unframed, 50 x 50 inches with a dark brown stained wood floater frame
Surface is protected with four coats of an archival UV protective varnish
Signed, verso
Excellent condition and ready to hang
This large abstract geometric painting was made by Hudson Valley based artist, Donise English, in 2022. The composition begins with a bright yellow background overlaid with intricate line work in graphite and colored pencil. Thousands of hand drawn lines serve as a backdrop for a bold geometric form in a dusty violet and dark gray gridded pattern that references "an imagined city grid", says the artist. The painting on paper is mounted to wood panel and complemented with a dark stained wood floater frame. It's in excellent condition and ready to hang as is. The surface is protected with four coats of an archival UV protective varnish.
More about the work:
Donise English emphasizes lines, grids, and fields of subtle color to evoke imagined places and invented structures. While precise lines and straight angles are often associated with themes in architecture and urban planning designs, English conveys a geometric motif guided by intuition rather than a ruler. Variations on grids retain flaws and unmistakable traces of the artists’ hand; her style of draftsmanship shies away from intellectualism and instead makes her compositions feel very personal. Each design is intensely intricate, incorporating gouache, acrylic, pen, graphite, ink and colored pencil.
Artist Statement:
My work is about the way visual diagrams present information that describes how something is made or the way it is. I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure.

Blue & Grey Green Plan: Abstract Geometric Framed Painting in Cool Toned Palette
By Donise English
Located in Hudson, NY
Abstract geometric painting with a cool toned palette of green, blue, and grey with accents of black and white against a sea foam green colored acrylic wash background
"Blue and Grey Green Plan" made by Hudson Valley artists, Donise English, in 2022
Graphite, colored pencil, and acrylic painting on vellum
24 x 18 inches unframed, 31 x 25 x 1.5 with an 8-ply white mat, non-glare plexi, and simple black moulding
Signed, verso
Excellent condition and ready to hang
This abstract geometric painting on vellum was made by Hudson Valley based artist, Donise English, in 2022. The composition begins with a blue green toned background of acrylic wash. A grid of box-like patterns in sky blue, green, grey, and black with white line work are stacked to create an irregular shape or an "imagined city grid", says the artist. The painting on vellum is complemented by a simple black frame with an 8-ply white mat, non-glare plexi, and wire backing. It's in excellent condition and ready to hang.
About the artist:
Donise English emphasizes lines, grids, and fields of subtle color to evoke imagined places and invented structures. While precise lines and straight angles are often associated with themes in architecture and urban planning designs, English conveys a geometric motif guided by intuition rather than a ruler. Variations on grids retain flaws and unmistakable traces of the artists’ hand; her style of draftsmanship shies away from intellectualism and instead makes her compositions feel very personal. A central checkerboard formation floats over a ground of pastel color or washes of grey or cream. Each design is intensely intricate, incorporating gouache, acrylic, pen, graphite, ink and colored pencil. The artist recently retired from her decades career teaching at Marist College and is now devoted full time to her art making.
