About the Item

Amy Van Winkle (b. 1969) is an artist living and working in Santa Fe, NM. Although her early artistic career focused on drawing, sketching, and mixed media works, she now works exclusively with the Encaustic medium. Van Winkle’s initial fascination with this ancient medium stemmed from its innate exchange between creation and restraint. The encaustic technique, which dates back to the 5th century BC, is the layering of pigmented beeswax, 20 to 30 coats deep, on a porous wood panel. By heating the surface with each application then scraping away repeatedly, Van Winkle achieves the unique balance of detail and minimalism. Once the composition is complete, mere hints remain of the color and texture residing just beneath the surface.

  • Road Map - Mixed Media Painting Geometric Abstraction, 2023
    Located in Newport Beach, CA
Elyse Katz (b.1951) is a self-taught American artist residing in Newport Beach, California. Her works are abstractions inspired by the visceral recollection of her personal experiences. As such, she calls her paintings “landscapes of my inner world.” Fittingly, physical landscapes and architectural rhythm also fuel her creativity: urban and rural vistas as viewed from the air, for example, textures and colors of old weathered surfaces and the pattern of cobblestone, to name a few. Katz begins each painting without expectation of outcome, with mark-making and play, layers of acrylic paint and oil pastels and found materials - vintage text...

  • Coastal Fugue #1
    By Sylvia Torres
    Located in Palm Desert, CA
This is the beautiful island Santa Rosa, one of the Channel Islands Sanctuary islands just off the California mainland. This vast stretch is adorned with a variety of fiery wildflowers stretching far and wide, like a musical composition of various themes and in different voices. Santa Rosa is home to an incredible array of birds and marine life. It is a narrow but spreading landscape ribboned with trails, each one seemingly in the manner of a flight or chase, repeating the same melody in a slight variation. The cliffs drop hundreds of feet to the crashing swells of ocean below, home to historic shipwrecks peacefully intact. Torres’ paintings appear on the sets of popular television shows: Big Little Big Lies, Criminal Minds, Chicago Med, Grey’s Anatomy...
