Angelo Di Benedetto
Black on Black Mid-Century Modern Painting, 3-D Shaped Canvas Hanging Mobile Art

circa 1955

About the Item

This stunning mid-century modern abstract 3-D painting was created by Denver modernist Angelo Di Benedetto (1913-1992), circa 1950. The piece features a shaped, three-dimensional canvas painted with a striking black-on-black acrylic design. Designed as a hanging mobile, the artwork is finished on both sides, adding a dynamic visual element from any angle. With dimensions of 22 3⁄4 inches in diameter and a depth of 9 inches, this piece exemplifies Di Benedetto’s exploration of form, color, and space within the mid-century modern movement. About the Artist: Angelo Di Benedetto was born in New Jersey in 1913 to Italian immigrant parents from the Salerno province. His early education at the Cooper Union Art School in New York (1930-34) laid the foundation for his artistic career. After winning a scholarship to the Boston Museum Art School, Di Benedetto spent three years refining his craft. His career took off in 1937 when he entered his first juried exhibition at the Montclair Museum in New Jersey, winning first prize. In 1938, Di Benedetto embarked on a transformative ethnological study trip to Haiti, sparking his interest in global cultures. His Haitian paintings were later exhibited in his first solo show at the Montross Gallery in New York in 1940. During World War II, Di Benedetto served in Eritrea, Africa, and later in the U.S., where he was stationed at Buckley Airfield in Denver. After the war, he chose to settle in Central City, Colorado, where he became deeply involved in the local arts community. A pioneer of abstract art in Colorado, Di Benedetto co-founded the Benpro Art School and the Denver Art Center, and was instrumental in forming the 15 Colorado Artists. His innovative work in circles and shaped canvas earned him recognition, and in 1977, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Colorado. Di Benedetto’s profound connection to abstraction and spirituality was reflected in his art, through which he sought to capture the invisible aspects of life. He passed away in 1992 in Central City, leaving behind a legacy of artistic innovation.
