About the Item
This innovative abstract painting represents Anna Spagna's distinctive exploration of light refraction and reflection through her signature mixed-media technique.
Created in 2023 using acrylic paint, wood letters, plastic elements, and retroreflective materials (catadioptric) on canvas, this contemporary artwork exemplifies Spagna's unique approach to creating luminous, interactive surfaces that respond dynamically to ambient lighting conditions.
To someone encountering this piece for the first time, the artwork presents a complex interplay of geometric forms and organic shapes that seem to shift and shimmer as light moves across the surface. The retroreflective elements embedded within the painted composition create an ever-changing visual experience, where certain areas appear to glow or recede depending on the viewer's position and the lighting conditions. The integration of dimensional wood letters and plastic components adds sculptural depth to the painted surface, creating a multi-layered dialogue between traditional painting techniques and contemporary material experimentation.
This piece represents a sophisticated fusion of traditional Italian artistic heritage with cutting-edge contemporary materials and concepts. Spagna's innovative use of retroreflective materials transforms the static nature of traditional painting into a dynamic, light-responsive medium that engages viewers in an active dialogue with the work. The artist's background in art restoration at Milan's Castello Sforzesco, where she worked with master restorer Ovidio Canesi from 1970-1977, informs her meticulous attention to material properties and surface treatment, resulting in works that bridge historical craftsmanship with contemporary conceptual art practices.
The Artist - Anna Spagna
Born in Syracuse, Sicily, Anna Spagna relocated to Milan in 1970 where she has maintained her practice for over five decades. Her extensive background includes formal art education in Syracuse, followed by specialized training in restoration techniques at the prestigious restoration workshops of Castello Sforzesco under maestro Ovidio Canesi. This foundation in classical techniques, combined with her exposure to Milan's avant-garde art scene through Studio Santandrea gallery, has shaped her unique artistic vision. Spagna's career spans from her first solo exhibition in 1989 to recent contemporary works, including participation in the 1993 Venice Biennale installation at the Corderie.
