About the Item
Jacquard weaving is at once simple and complex. The language used to set up weave
structures is straightforward and binary: the warp is either up or down. With the
Jacquard loom, however, each warp thread moves independently, allowing for the
fabrication of complex and intricate tapestries, and an almost infinite potential of markmaking.
In my hand-woven Jacquard tapestries, I examine the twin practices of making
and interpreting marks, of encoding and decoding. Drawing on a variety of sources, from
the urban vernacular of graffiti to scientific recordings of decaying particles, I am
interested in our attempts to make sense of the world through visual structures.
We are surrounded by visual manifestations of data, information, and language - written
words, marks rendered by hand, signs, diagrams, charts, scientific imaging, geological
patterns – all of which contain the potential for meaning as well as misinterpretation.
Each day presents the challenge of decoding the signs we encounter. In my tapestries I
merge marks made by humans and nature, and translate them into a variety of weave
structures. Not so much concerned with presenting a single interpretation, I see the
layering of visual information as an invitation to potential readings and possible
meanings.

Alexandra Rutsch Brock, Connections, 2020, gouache, thread, 8 x 8 inches
By Alexandra Rutsch Brock
Located in Darien, CT
These new small-scale paintings were created using gouache on handmade paper. Alexandra Rutsch Brock then “drew” with a sewing machine using various colored threads. Using the thread as a painted line, playing with the marks and motifs the machine allows that creates contrast in both surface and color. They are sewn directly with no preliminary sketches, just instinctive gesture, sometimes in a similar color to enhance a texture, other times contrasting as a new element. The entangled threads that dangle down emphasize the materiality. Working so closely to the surface, she is aware of the senses of seeing, breathing, touching and feeling……………escaping into these new surfaces.
Alexandra Rutsch Brock has exhibited in solo and group shows most recently at The Keck School at USC, CA, The Painting Center, NY, Village West Gallery, NJ and Misericordia University, PA.
Her work has been featured in Studio Visit Magazine SV Vol44. Her recent co-curations include “HyperAccumulators” with Elizabeth Saperstein at Pelham Art Center, NY and “Among Friends” project with artists Patricia Fabricant and Beth Dary...

Notes:
Mathieu Matégot was a Hungarian-born French designer, architect and artist. After studying at Budapest's School of Fine Arts in 1929, Matégot travelled across Italy and the USA until settling in Paris in 1931 where he worked as a set designer, window dresser and tapestry maker.
Matégot volunteered for the French resistance at the start of the Second World War, only to be captured by the Nazis. A dreadful fate for most, however, it was during his time as a prisoner of war that the artist discovered metalworking techniques (such as Rigitulle) which he later patented and became renowned for. Upon his release, Matégot was awarded French citizenship.
After the war, the artist's interest in tapestry was renewed after being introduced to contemporary tapestry revivalist, Jean Lurçat. However, in order to make ends meet, Matégot pursued furniture design; he established a workshop in Paris and dedicated his time to translating the groundbreaking metal techniques into popular handcrafted objects.
In 1959, Matégot abandoned furniture design and focused exclusively on his passion for abstract tapestries. He continued his work as a pioneer of French Modern tapestry...
