About the Item
Jacquard weaving is at once simple and complex. The language used to set up weave
structures is straightforward and binary: the warp is either up or down. With the
Jacquard loom, however, each warp thread moves independently, allowing for the
fabrication of complex and intricate tapestries, and an almost infinite potential of markmaking.
In my hand-woven Jacquard tapestries, I examine the twin practices of making
and interpreting marks, of encoding and decoding. Drawing on a variety of sources, from
the urban vernacular of graffiti to scientific recordings of decaying particles, I am
interested in our attempts to make sense of the world through visual structures.
We are surrounded by visual manifestations of data, information, and language - written
words, marks rendered by hand, signs, diagrams, charts, scientific imaging, geological
patterns – all of which contain the potential for meaning as well as misinterpretation.
Each day presents the challenge of decoding the signs we encounter. In my tapestries I
merge marks made by humans and nature, and translate them into a variety of weave
structures. Not so much concerned with presenting a single interpretation, I see the
layering of visual information as an invitation to potential readings and possible
meanings.

- Anne Russinof, Tall Vault 2015, Oil on canvas, Color Field, AbstractionBy Anne RussinofLocated in Darien, CTRussinof uses large brushes to create highly energized gestures that intimate various patterns and forms in architecture such as frames, cornices and baroque ceiling vaults. The paint-ings are process-based in the sense that one is aware of drips and the accretion of layers, and also flirt with their role as objects by virtue of the gesture’s relation to the painting edge. Color serves to create a window onto natural space and light, even as the forms themselves acknowledge their own framing. She often thinks in these works of Renaissance portraits where the sitter’s forearm rests on the very edge of the frame, inviting intimacy, with a tiny landscape...Category
