About the Item
Annette Davidek creates paintings that look like gorgeous biomes full of naturalistic forms, enticing viewers to enter a domain that is as familiar as it is strange. Variously suggestive of exotic plants and animals, or obscure microscopic organisms, her otherworldly subjects hover in their color-saturated spaces. The artist layers their shapes over one another by applying transparent glazes of oil paint on birch panels. Each layer adds a mysterious sense of depth, inviting the viewer further and further into the shadowy images submerged within, while the shapes in the foreground are rendered in sharper relief. The result suggests nothing less than an enchanted cosmos full of life.

Annette Davidek
Annette Davidek (b. 1957, Flint, MI) creates mysterious yet beautiful paintings that reference naturalistic forms, from exotic plants and sea life to microscopic organisms. Combining inspiration from her trips to China and Japan with botanical diagrams and technological illustrations, she layers transparent glazes of oil paint to animate her otherworldly subjects. These colorful forms range in size and opacity, and they vary in color and tone. Davidek strives to "transport the viewer to another place. There is always a ghost behind my paintings. [In fact] there may be several layers of ghosts." Davidek completed her BFA at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and continued her education by earning an MFA at Hunter College in New York. She has exhibited throughout the United States and now lives and works in Brooklyn.
