About the Item
Contemporary artist Aron Hill has often re-imagined landscapes—land and sky in compelling minimalist form. In this piece, a night sky—the sun eclipsed by the moon but for a slender bright ring is suspended over the landscape represented as six figurative shapes in jet black. Images of the sun and rocks are central to much of Hill’s work. The Calgary-based artist is using a collage method to assemble this composition by gluing, threading and painting to create a textured canvas.
“These paintings use the recurring theme of rocks as both land markers and altars set against a seemingly empty space or landscape. In both cases, the pieces show a dark sky delineated with an embroidered line. The dark moon eclipses a bleached sun, one fully hidden and the other showing its flares. These are nighttime suspensions of space and time.” Aron Hill
Aron Hill obtained a BFA in Interdisciplinary Studies from the Alberta College of Art and Design and an MFA from Goldsmiths College, University of London in 2006. They have exhibited across Canada and in Dubai. Hill’s work is held in private and corporate collections.

Aron Hill's practice is focused on a formalist type of painting that recalls aspects of minimalism and Color-Field paintings though with references to the figure throughout. They find conceptual company in the late modernist paintings produced particularly in Canada. The choice of primary colors and a restricted medium is a conscious restraint informed by Hill’s artistic influences such as Jack Bush and William Perehudoff. The work's graphic nature relies on the sheer flatness that this medium produces.
Hill currently lives and works in Calgary, Alberta. They graduated from Alberta College of Art and Design in 2000 with a BFA in Interdisciplinary studies. Hill then completed their MFA at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Hill has exhibited internationally, and occasionally lectures and writes.
