Aron Hill
Hiding Sun with Black - bright, colorful, intersecting abstract shapes on canvas

2021

About the Item

A brilliant yellow sun peeks out behind hot pink, deep blue and contrasting black shapes in this abstract landscape by Calgary artist Aron Hill. This is one of a series of acrylic paintings they recently created. Conceptually, Hill’s work finds company in the art of famed modernist Jack Bush. The background color shifts and lightens toward the top of the work. “In the last year I’ve become really comfortable with what I’m doing. I think I stopped asking art to do things it cannot do. I’ve stepped back and just said, ‘I’m going to do it!” Aron Hill Hill's practice is focused on a formalist type of painting that recalls aspects of minimalism and color field paintings though with references to the figure throughout. They find conceptual company in the late Modernist paintings produced particularly in Canada. The choice of a primary colors and restricted medium, is a conscious restraint informed by Hill’s artistic influences such as Jack Bush and William Perehudoff. The work's graphic nature relies on the sheer flatness this medium produces. Aron Hill currently lives and works in Calgary, Alberta. They graduated from Alberta College of Art and Design in 2000 with a BFA in Interdisciplinary studies. Hill then completed their MFA at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Aron Hill has exhibited internationally, occasionally lectures, and writes.

TIME, IT TAKES I 2022 Paris, France A graphic and bold abstract painting on linen, with dark blue green ink and white acrylic accents. A single, bold, orange line is situated on the left side of the painting, a commentary on markers of time as an ineffective unit of measurement. Time interpreted not as linear, but an experience outside of numbers and outside of logic. Option to create a pair alongside "Time, It Takes II" (as pictured). Price and size are per painting. • "Set Us In Stone I" (abstract, blue, Parisian, graphic, bust on natural canvas)
    By Nicholas Evans
    Located in Paris, IDF
SET US IN STONE I 2022 Paris, France Originally created as part of Nicholas' solo exhibition "This, and Thereafter (Plumes)," December 10, 2022 - January 7, 2023. The theme illustrated the enigmatic uncertainty around what might happen after life. A range of paintings were presented – vibrant and ethereal – touching on different aspects of this notion. Each painting had a different point of view, oftentimes focusing around the inevitability of what is to come, and if and how it influences the present. This particular piece centers around personal legacy, how you will be remembered, and how your life vanishes into an abstraction as time goes by. This notion is visualized with a bust set in stone. The technique Evans used was a mixing of water-based ink with a hint of blue, that he knew would react when overlaid with white acrylic, pulling out a lighter hue of the blue ink. The white silhouette of a portrait set in stone creates a ghostly continuation of the underlaid pattern. Option to create a pair alongside "Set Us In Stone II" (as pictured). Price and size are per painting. Evans Deventer...

  • "Lus Osculi" (Abstract Black & White, Graphic Painting, Roman-inspired, Neutral)
    By Nicholas Evans
    Located in Paris, IDF
Drawing inspiration from the ancient Roman term "Los Osculi," translating to "right to kiss," the artist delves into a compelling exploration of the past's intriguing customs. In ancient Rome, women were prohibited from drinking as it was believed to lead to adultery and even possess abortifacient properties. Consequently, the husband and male family members of an "honest" woman possessed the right to kiss her on the mouth to ensure her sobriety. The allure of fleeting kisses, whispers of scent, and the sensuality of suspicion captivated the artist's imagination. On an antique French canvas...
