About the Item
The Pinajian story is one of near loss, discovery and posthumous success. A compatriot of De Kooning and friend of fellow Armenian-American Gorky, Pinajian was a member of the post-WWII group of American artists who called the Cedar Bar home and introduced a muscular American vernacular to the canon.
Pinajian chose not to show or exhibit and directed that his work be destroyed after his death. Fortunate circumstances intervened, and the rest is history. The Pinajian story has been featured in numerous publications, including the New York Times, the BBC and Good Morning America.

Arthur Pinajian
Arthur Pinajian (1914-1999)
Rarely do we discover a worthy artist who works alone and unheralded. Arthur Pinajian was one of them. He drew and painted in obscurity until his death in 1999 at the age of 85. The majority of his work was found after his death stacked up in the one-car garage and attic of his sister’s property. Pinajian, was a native of Union City, New Jersey. He started as a cartoonist in the 1930s and found considerable success fashioning comic strips for Quality, Marvel, and Centaur Comics. After World War II, during which he earned the Bronze Star for valor, he rejected commercial art, attended the Art Students League in New York, and committed himself to the pursuit of serious painting. Prior to his many years in Bellport with Armen, he rented a studio in Woodstock, New York, and there and in West New York, New Jersey, he began to wrestle with the challenges of being a modern artist. This meant painting in a variety of styles ranging from the figurative to the abstract. The word exploration sums up the nature of his quest: he worked in the manner of Impressionism, Fauvism, Expressionism, and Cubism before turning to Surrealism and various modes of abstraction, including Abstract Expressionism. Part of Pinajian’s learning process was to echo the styles of well-known artists — making free copies as a means of perfecting his visual vocabulary. In the end, however, he forged his own style without a heavy debt to others. He also philosophized about the creative process. Found among his effects were numerous journals in which he wrote down his ideas about the making of art. Issues of color, composition, and pattern captured much of his attention. It is noteworthy that he became a veritable It is noteworthy that he became a veritable master of structural color.
What is so remarkable about Pinajian is his wholehearted dedication to the process of painting. He pursued his goals in isolation with the single-minded focus of a Gauguin or Cezanne, refusing to give up in the face of public indifference. In his later years he could be compared to a researcher in a laboratory pursuing knowledge for its own sake.
- Pinajian’s work is uneven, but when he hits the mark, especially in his abstractions, he can be ranked among the best artists of his era. It is satisfying to contemplate his more successful works, doubly so because they capture the excitement of visual modernism and exude a painterly integrity that is rare in our time. - Professor, William Innes Homer New York Times, WSJ.com, London Daily Mail, ABC’s 20/20, Good Moring America, which in 2013 heralded Pinajian as “the unlikely discovery that has rocked the art world”. - CurtainBy Amaranth EhrenhaltLocated in Lawrence, NYOne of the "Women of Abstract Expressionism" Amaranth Ehrenhalt was long interested in patter and the idea of decoration in her work. Indeed, in the mid-60s, before Miriam Schapiro or Judy Chicago or the idea of "femmage," she embarked on a series of works that explored these ideas. This is one of them. She wanted to incorporate typically female images and ideas into her art. To quote one reviewer of Miriam Schapiro's work: "These things had been tossed aside, and she gave them appreciation." Amaranth Ehrenhalt was a multifaceted artist best known for her paintings. She was part of the second generation of Abstract Expressionists, working first in New York in the early 1950s, and then in Paris for much of the rest of her career. Never afraid to experiment, Ehrenhalt's work may best be described as bold, even aggressive, in execution, composition and even color. She worked across media, including oils, works on paper, prints and etchings, tapestry, design and sculpture. Amaranth Ehrenhalt died on March 16, 2021 in Manhattan. She was 93. The cause was Covid-19. Ehrenhalt moved to Paris early in her career and settled there as an expatriate artist for the next forty-odd years. Le Select Cafe was the place where artists and cognoscenti met. There Ehrenhalt met Beauford Delaney...Category

- UntitledBy Melville PriceLocated in Lawrence, NYOil on paper Estate stamped The history of the New York School painters is still being written, but Price earned a well-deserved place from the beginning. Price was one of the youngest of the first generation Abstract Expressionist circle of painters working in New York after WWII. Though only in his late twenties he began exhibiting in 1948 in New York at Hugo, Bodely, Iolas and Egan galleries. In a 1949, showing at Peridot galleries, Price was hailed for his breakthrough "Maze Series." A complex interweaving of organic shapes, automatic in nature and sometimes resembling bones or body parts, the "Maze" paintings exuded a pulsating energy that brought him critical acclaim. He received rave reviews in Art Digest, the New York Times and the New York Tribune. Price's earliest work was biomorphic or surrealist in nature, influenced by the automatism of Andre Breton and his school. By 1946, his work began to move away from this style to an all-over, decentralized style which became the "Maze" works and ultimately AbEx works which saw their culmination in the "Black Warrior" series. When the "Club" was started, Price was invited to join and forged close relationships with other members of the New York School including Fritz Bultman, Giorgio Cavallon, Weldon Kees, Bradley Walker Tomlin...Category
