Barbara Marks is a multidisciplinary artist based in Connecticut. She uses color to create space. "A child of the 60s, I fell into graphic design and established my studio specializing in book design. In 2001, I left that behind to study painting at Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts (BFA 2005) and Brooklyn College CUNY (MFA 2008). I’ve been awarded artist residencies in Italy, France, and across the United States and have shown my work throughout the Northeast," she says. Marks has been a resident artist at the Vermont Studio Center, Virginia Center, for the Creative Arts, Fowler Dune Shack (Cape Cod), Martignano International Residency for Artists (Martignano, Italy), Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts (Wyoming), Jentel Foundation (Wyoming), Los Angeles Summer Residency at the Otis College of Art and Design (California), The Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences (Georgia), The Research Studio at Art & History Museums — Maitland (Florida), Monson Arts (Maine) and Moulin à Nef (Auvillar, France). Marks has twice been a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome. Her works have been shown at the Cape Cod Museum of Art (Massachusetts); the Providence Art Club (Rhode Island); the Painting Center, First Street Gallery and Atlantic Gallery (New York City); the Ground Floor Gallery (Brooklyn); Drawing Rooms (New Jersey); the New Britain Museum of American Art, DaSilva Gallery, Silvermine Arts Center, Ely Center of Contemporary Art, Whitney Center, Serendipity Gallery, The Loft Gallery, Five Points Gallery and The Chase Family Gallery (Connecticut); the McLanahan Gallery at Penn State Altoona (Pennsylvania); The Affordable Art Fair (New York City) and the Artist-Run at The Satellite Show (Miami). Marks is an artist member of The Painting Center (New York); the Artists Collective of Westport (Connecticut) and a Guild Artist at Silvermine Arts Center (Connecticut). Her paperwork is represented in the flat file at the Artspace New Haven. Marks is a Trustee of the Vermont Studio Center and a former board member of the Artspace in New Haven, Connecticut. She divides her time between Connecticut and New York City.
