Born in New Jersey in 1912, she studied at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art, Rutgers University, and the Art Students League in New York, where she was influenced by Cubism and European modernism. During the 1930s, Mandelman worked with the WPA (Works Progress Administration), mastering printmaking and developing early abstract techniques. In 1942, she and her husband, artist Louis Ribak, moved to Taos, New Mexico, where they played a key role in shaping the town’s modern art scene. Mandelman’s work is celebrated for its bold color palettes, geometric forms, and expressive compositions. She once stated, “I broke all the rules. I use a primitive language—squares, circles, triangles, primitive colors—to create sophisticated art.” Her legacy lives on at the Harwood Museum in Taos, home to a significant collection of her work.
