About the Item

Bernard Aubertin (1934 -.) Tableau Clous 1970 Nails and acrylic on panel, 50 × 50 cm Verso signed and dated. Bernard Aubertin associates the element fire with a glowing red. "The red gives me a feeling of identification with the fire." (B. Aubertin, in: B. Aubertin, Das Feuer und das Rot, Bielefeld 1997, p. 29). His red nail works emanate a magic charged with energy. In combination with the nails' iron, associations of red glowing metals lie close. Alone the nails' serial arrangement forces rigidity upon the image surface. The French artist Bernard Aubertin met Yves Klein in 1957. After this capital meeting he painted his his first red monochromes. In 1961, Bernard Aubertin joined ZERO, a German artists’ group made up of (Otto Piene, Heinz Mack and Günther Uecker). With them Aubertin shared a distrust of language: “Art isn’t expression, it’s knowledge. You don’t have something to say, you can only be” (Bernard Aubertin). For Aubertin, monochrome painting is the best way to free oneself from the painter’s gesture and, in doing so, give rise to a pure space and an anonymous vital energy. Ascribing a prophetic, liberating value to the color red and “levitating fire,” in which he sees a materialization of “extrasensory” culture, Aubertin has tirelessly developed his many series of paintings, the “monochromes,” “squares,” “reds,” “fires,” “golds” and so on. Aubertin exhibited with the ZERO group in Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Berlin and Milan. collections include Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris, Paris Musée de Grenoble, Grenoble Centre National de l'Art Contemporain, Paris Musée de Graz, Graz Museum of Düsseldortf, Düsseldorft Archivio della Grazia di Nuova Scrittura, Milan Museo de Arte Moderno, Venezuela Solo Exhibitions 1962, Galerie Wulfengasse, Austria 1967, Falerie Weiller, Paris; Galerie M.E.
