About the Item

Bill Komodore - Optical Art Series - Large Geometric Abstract Oil Painting An electrifying example of Bill Komodore’s masterful engagement with Op Art, this geometric abstraction pulses with rhythmic energy, bright color and tension. Komodore, a Greek-American artist known for his precise, illusionistic compositions, studied under Mark Rothko and carried forth a deep understanding of color theory and spatial dynamics. Pyra Sun is a striking piece which exemplifies Komodore’s command of shape and spatial depth. The work is emblematic of the Op Art movement, standing alongside the legacies of Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely. About the Artist: - Bill Komodore (1932-2012) was an influential abstract and Op Art painter. - Studied under Mark Rothko, absorbing color field theory and visual dynamism. - Exhibited internationally, with works held in notable private and institutional collections. - Known for bold compositions that challenge perception and movement. This piece is a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire a work by an under-recognized yet pivotal artist in 20th-century geometric abstraction. Ideal for modern interiors, corporate collections, and serious Op Art enthusiasts. Bill Komodore was included in the major Op exhibitions of the 1960s, including: MoMA’s "The Responsive Eye" 1965; the Albright-Knox’s "Plus by Minus" 1966; the Museum of Fine Arts, "Boston’s Multiplicity" 1966; and the Cincinnati Art Museum’s "Art in Motion" 1965. At the Whitney Museum of American Art, Komodore was included in "Young America: Thirty Artists under Thirty-Five" in 1965, "Artists Under Forty" in 1968, and the annual exhibitions of 1965 and 1967.
