About

Blair Thurman was born in New Orleans in 1961. Describing his practice as "'less-than' painting", meaning "something very simple that leads you to the next thing", Thurman's works address how to create art when the "great painters had already done almost everything at least once" (Blair Thurman, interview with Alain Elkann, 2018.) Thurman is best known for his neon works and his abstract paintings that appropriate American car culture, including references to model cars, motor speedways, race car decals, and car lacquer paint. "Horton Hears a Hoo-Hoo" is a circular shaped pastel pink canvas with sharp, jagged white canvas teeth circling its central hole. While Thurman lists Andy Warhol, John Wesley, Steve Parrino, Nam June Paik, Carl Andre, and Ed Kienholz as artistic influences, the structure of "Horton Hears a Hoo-Hoo" particularly resembles a Lee Bontecou sculpture. Its title directly references the Dr. Seuss children's book "Horton Hears a Who." In the book, an elephant named Horton encounters a world of minuscule creatures who inhabit a planet contained in a speck of dust that floats by him as he splashes in a pool. The other animals inhabiting Horton's jungle do not believe the planet exists because they cannot hear the inhabitants speaking. Horton encourages the inhabitants of the planet's central city, Whoville, to unite in together making as much noise as they possibly can so that the other jungle animals can hear. Finally believing in the existence of the tiny planet, Horton's jungle companions join him in his task of protecting the inhabitants of Whoville, echoing the book's recurring theme, "a person's a person, no matter how small." "I often find that the painters I really like seem to use great titles. The title is an opportunity for the artist to identify their position in relation to the viewer. Am I giving you the finger? Are we sharing a joke? Are we sharing a secret? Am I patting you on the head? Am I happy? Am I sad?" (Blair Thurman, interview with Nicolas Trembley, 2016.)
