Brian Neish
Vanishing - Blue & White Abstract Art / Geometric Square: Oil on Canvas

2021

About the Item

Brian Neish is fascinated by painted surfaces, particularly surfaces having to endure the extremes of sunlight, wind, frost and rain. He calls the appearance of these debilitating effects ‘Noble Decay’ to suggest a sense of them displaying increasingly unique visual qualities over extended periods of time. He never scrapes paint off, it’s all about the considered application of paint, one layer at a time Each series of treatments, conducted over many months, reveals surprising and unexpected moments. Brian’s love of decay and the transience of buildings, especially the painterly surfaces of doors and walls, is clearly apparent. His layering of paint creates its own organic life, where past surfaces are seen though present surfaces. There is space and an open quality where the viewer can develop a relationship with the paintings. This painting is a work from Brian Neish’s mini-series "Grey Paintings", comprising of six works that were started in early 2020 and resolved by the summer of 2021. They are an evolution of ideas first explored in his Panels series from 2011 and more recent White series: the use of solid shapes, grids, and framing devices to develop a motif. Despite its many treatments, Vanishing feels like a light and airy painting compared to others in the series. Partly this might be down to the blurred pale grey lines in the grid structure and framing device, features that appear to be dissolving in front of our eyes. Neish likes to think of this painting as his version of Hockney’s A Bigger Splash but with a different perspective: a look directly down into a swimming pool some seconds after the diver has swum by, the water gradually resettling in the bright Californian sunlight.

Reflections on Crossing XXXIV / abstract realism, architecture, minimalism
By Anne Subercaseaux
Located in Burlingame, CA
Shades of sea blue-green with grey are at play in Anne Subercaseaux's meticulously painted 'Reflections on Crossing XXXIV', oil on canvas. Anne Subercaseaux finds substance in the insubstantial, in paintings that freeze the ephemeral patterns of reflection and shadow. In her muted, almost monochrome palettes, images seem familiar but still elusive. The precise silhouette of a bridge girder or a windblown branch moves into focus and out again, a fleeting glimpse from the corner of the eye...

Down by the Pier
By Diana Tremaine
Located in Burlingame, CA
'The Wind Whipped Up and They Welcomed Its Offering' - seagulls stand against an abstracted beach scene in this contemporary oil on canvas painting, 'Contemplating Progress II', by artist Diana Tremaine, whose series of paintings that depict abstracted birds and natural elements is called "Navigating Crosscurrents". The 45 x 45 inch painting beautifully bridges abstraction with realism via a calming palette of warmth and layers of paint. Tremaine's dynamic, representational and nature-centric oil paintings reflect a search for truth and meaning. The artist develops brushstrokes and marks by adding and then obliterating some of the story in a free-association editorial process of discovering what is most important and lasting. The melancholy images echo her experiences in an autobiographical fashion, but they are also universal and touch upon and evoke our collective memories like ghosts of what was. Created with a limited palette, there is visual poetry in her surfaces, including the tension that exists when simultaneously holding on and letting go. Diana Tremaine's Artist Statement for this series, 'Navigating Crosscurrents': "I am often taken aback by the might shown by tiny little songbirds managing the winds and rains that at times surround them. In my “Navigating Crosscurrents” series, the birds stand as metaphors for the human experience while the abstraction around them represents the forces - both internal and external, natural and man-made - that act around and within each of us every day. Life is a balancing act – at times breezy and light, at others cacophonous and overwhelming. These images speak metaphorically to the delicate balance and fortitude required as we journey down our respective paths." The bicoastal New York City-born artist studied and taught in both Northern and Southern California. She later moved to Montana—in a search for spiritual space and room to breathe—where she works and lives with her family, dogs and horses. 'Down by the Pier...
