About the Item

Brianna Bass (b. 1990) is a painter from Knoxville, Tennessee. She is a co-founder, curator, and writer for Mineral House Media, an artist-run, web-based platform designed to elevate Southeastern contemporary art. Brianna earned her BFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2013 and is currently an MFA candidate at Yale University school of art. Partially deaf, Bass has a difficult time hearing the frequencies at which people speak on a day to day basis. Her paintings have become her means of coping with her frustrations and anxieties surrounding the concept of listening. Constantly feeling as though she is only receiving a portion of the information coming her way, she has devised a system in which she can translate sound data to color In order to create a full representations of sound. "I think that by missing pieces of conversation, I am made sensitive to the machinations of communication that we all experience. We rely on our knowledge of predictive systems to determine, in streams of sound and movement, what has meaning. What I know about the subject is a predictive system; what I know about the person, about sentence structure, how they speak, how the mouth is moving, my familiarity with language as a whole, and so on. In my paintings, I want to establish a primary predictive framework, and then complexify, confound, elevate, and destabilize that sensation of wholeness in varying degrees.” Brianna’s system for translating sheet music into color fields is complicated- she assigns a color to every note on the musical scale, and then paints these strokes of color in patterns that represent the undulating tones and volume of the music. Each mark occupies the space of an eighth note. Flats and sharps are shifted by half a hue. Rests are grey. By analogising audible, spatial, and temporal impressions, chromatic systems have the capacity to produce small destabilizations that create room for the prosthetic fusion of senses, leading to broader opportunities for synesthetic experience.
