This modern geometric painting by Burton Kramer was inspired by music.
During his storied decades-long career, Burton Kramer has achieved international recognition as one of Canada’s finest graphic artists and designers. His bold, graphic and vividly colored artwork is inspired by the rhythm of a musical beat. Kramer calls his paintings ‘visual music.’
This new piece reflects Kramer’s modernist sensibilities— clean, crisp-edged graphic shapes in fresh, bright colors—turquoise, sky and deep blue, golden yellow, red, soft pink, purple, lilac, light green and black for contrast.
The curated juxtaposition of shapes—rectangles, lines and squares gives the viewer the impression that the piece has rhythmic movement as if Kramer is playing a tune with paint.

Burton Kramer was born in New York City in 1932. He is renowned for designing the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation logo in 1974. Kramer trained at Yale University (MFA), The Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology (BSc), The Royal College of Art, London (Fulbright Scholar) and The State University of New York. Kramer has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Arts Ontario, The Order of Ontario by the Province, an Honorary Doctorate from Ontario College of Art & Design, and was named a Member of the Order of Canada. His work has been exhibited in galleries internationally and is held in many private and public collections.

Burton Kramer
Burton Kramer (b. 1932) explores the language of visual forms and sound. The artist trained at Yale University (M.F.A.), The Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology (BSc), The Royal College of Art, London (Fulbright Scholar) and The State University of New York. Kramer is one of Canada’s most influential graphic designers. He designed the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation logo in 1974. Kramer received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Art Directors & Designers Club, The Order of Ontario from the province, an honorary doctorate from Ontario College of Art & Design and was named a member of the Order of Canada. His work is in many private and public collections including the Royal Ontario Museum.

About the Artist: Juliette Steele, an American artist, was an accomplished printmaker, painter and teacher. Steele was part of the Geometric Abstraction and Abstract Expressionism movements. Her peers included Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Hans Hofmann, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, and Clyfford Still.
Steele was born in 1909 in Union City, New Jersey. In the late 1920s, she moved to New York to study art and fashion design at the Traphagen School of Design. A decade later, she moved to San Francisco with husband Edward Steele, and earned a Bachelor of Art degree from San Francisco State College.
In the 1940s, Steele found inspiration from the new city, and produced a series of lithographs depicting San Francisco landmarks. At the same time, she earned a Master of Fine Arts from Stanford University, and continued her studies at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco.
