The paintings of Swedish born, Cyprus-based abstract painter Carolina Alotus are luminous, fantastical arenas in which beauty and harmony negotiate fiercely with chaos. Her compositions are active and energetic, sparking visual tension from unexpected relationships between colors, forms and textures, and from the feverish juxtaposition of seemingly disparate mediums and techniques.
Her idiosyncratic visual language blends the traditions of Gestural Abstraction, Street Art, Art Brut, Action Painting, and Pop Art.
Alotus has exhibited throughout Europe and in the United States, including at Gallery Kim Anstensen, Sweden; the Royal College of Art, Kensington, UK; Schombiurg Gallery, Los Angeles, USA; and at the Cyprus International Art Exhibition, Nicosia, Cyprus. Her work is included in numerous private collections, and was featured The Rebel Collection, the first Saatchi Art catalogue of 2020.

Carolina Alotus
Known for active and energetic compositions, Carolina Alotus is a Swedish contemporary abstract painter whose works are luminous, fantastical arenas in which beauty and harmony negotiate fiercely with chaos. Self-taught, she embraced abstraction after working as a figurative painter specialized in lush, dreamlike, large-scale reproductions of flowers. Shutting off the mind chatter and creating from heart, the artist doesn’t consciously put symbolism into her paintings, despite occasional references to numbers, letters, or other recognizable imagery. Carolina Alotus was born in Malmo, grew up in the Goteborg region, eventually moving to Cyprus in 1990, where she still lives and works.

"This series of intensely colorful paintings was begun a couple of years back in reaction to the gray oppressive weight that had descended like a pall on the American scene. I wanted to make paintings about nothing but pure delight, in honor of the fact that beneath the fog of germs and political antagonism, we still eat, laugh, love and if we're wise, acknowledge how spectacularly fortunate we are -- at least for now, in this time and place, despite the problems. For me, the colors, forms and brushstrokes here feel exuberant without suggesting an unnerving chaos. I have purposely used unlikely color combinations that despite their dissonance seem to work together. I don't feel this is a time to be making brooding works that reflect the problems we are working our way through; we all know about this. On the contrary, I think it's a time for art...
