Purple Bay is an original painting by Catherine Warren. Part of a series of paintings, Purple Bay is an exploration of the colours and textures – the fresh ‘wildness’ – of a Cornish bay.
Catherine takes inspiration from landscapes and nature, from close to her home in Surrey, to the Dorset and Cornwall coast and as far as the Caribbean. She is particularly draw to colour, light and contrast and tries to produce paintings with energy, freedom and movement. She strives to capture something of the essence of a ‘moment in time’, the atmosphere and experience of a certain place. Her paintings encompass the energy of nature alongside that of our own presence in the landscape: the marks we make (both by our presence and through manmade structures), the balance of landscape and humans, and how we sit alongside each other, blend into each other, jar against each other. Catherine works mainly in acrylics, incorporating mixed media such as chalk and oil pastels, acrylic ink and charcoal. Catherine was voted Surrey Artist of the Year 2018.

During this year it was difficult to travel. So I looked through some of the images I had photographed from an earlier trip to the desert with its wide views, amazing colours and BIG sky; somewhere warm and interesting. This is one of a series of paintings influenced by the visit to the deserts of Jordan and Israel. After the fascination of Petra, hewn out of rock, it was the sense of freedom in its immensity, the natural forms of craters and wadis at different times that stimulated me; gold in the morning, purple and orange at dusk.
