Charles Hinman
Optical wall sculptures

1974

About the Item

Our shaped canvas which also is a sculptural form in essence for a wall, is a geometric and forward play of optical illusion. Hinman is an important pioneer of exploration in the contemporary world, away from the idea of the “square” and flat canvas. He is linked to such artists as Robert Indiana, James Rosenquist, Tom Wesselman and he pre-dated Frank Stella’s exploration of canvas as wall relief structures. Hinman’s shaped canvases parallels the experimentation of Hard-Edge painting. He is represented in many major museums throughout the United States. These canvases are future forward alternatives in interiors to flat canvas and are a rising market for collectors. Sure to change an interior into something very fresh and new and with one of the great pioneers in this realm. Signed and dated C. Hinman 74 verso

Note all the formal elements are present – her eyes, her smile, her dress and bosom – yet assemble and disassemble in front of our eyes. From Peter Schenck...
