About the Item

Oil on canvas Chase Langford is an artist well-known for his geography-inspired paintings; the "Chroma" series is his investigation of color. "Imagine the effect of spending much of a lifetime intimately tracing coasts, rivers, highways and more. Inevitably the visual rhythms of geography largely created my visual sensibility, that is, my sense of what works or does not work visually." A brighter, beachier contribution to the Chroma series than some of the desert and earth tone palettes Langford enjoys, "Chroma X14" evokes the Aegean sea in aquatic ocean blues and soft dreamy greys. There is aqua, cobalt, and dove; the colors of the Mediterranean sea and stone, with a strong white foundation that gives an immediate burst of balanced, nuanced color among the striated brushwork which anchors Langfords measured, formal composition. Born in Pontiac, Michigan, Chase Langford studied cartography at UC Santa Barbara, then began his career working as a cartographer at UCLA. With his “Map Paintings” in the 1980’s, Langford began reinterpreting geography by reconfiguring selected features from maps. By transforming the familiar geographic shapes and forms in a flurry of abstract color and movement, the purpose of the series, as Langford notes, “was not to explain the geography of a place but rather to use the essence of geographic forms to re-express them in an entirely new way.” Langford’s works have been widely exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across the United States, and his work can be found in many corporate and public collections, in institutions such as the Keck School of Medicine at USC, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Monique Lhuillier, Inc., Caesar’s Palace, Dykema Grossett LLP, Sidley Austin LLP, Meacham Oppenheimer, Inc., and Park Hyatt Aviara, in addition to numerous notable private collections in North America, Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, and Australia, including those of Magic Johnson and the Saudi Royal Family, among others. He lives and works in Southern California.

Chroma X62
By Chase Langford
Located in Napa, CA
Inspired by cartography from an early age, Chase Langford’s abstract paintings transform the familiarity of cities and maps into fluid visions, evoking the feeling of the location with carefully selected color and precise shapes. In the 1980’s, after studying cartography at UC Santa Barbara and drawing maps for the UCLA faculty, Langford began exploring ways to combine his mastery of map-making with his love of fine art. In his original map paintings, Langford reinterprets geography by taking selected features from maps and filling in the reconfigured shapes with flurries of color, exploring varied locations such as Essex, England and the Galapagos Islands. In his “Morphic” series, Langford once again finds inspiration in specific geographic regions, abstracting them until they are nearly unrecognizable with colors interweaving and flowing around each other. Almost seeming to mimic the fluid strata of the Earth, Langford adds and scrapes away layers of oil paint, building up intricate textures while simultaneously revealing the colors below. Langford’s highly-collected “Chroma” series began as a happy mistake. One day, displeased with the brushwork of a painting, he decided to obscure the image by painting small rows of vertical brushstrokes; in doing so, he took note of the beauty of organic uniformity. After years of refining his technique, Langford created the trance-like paintings that he likes to think of as rows of city blocks on a map. Langford has completed many site-specific commissions, including for Monique Lhuillier, Inc.; the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation; and Caesar’s Palace...

COLOUR BANDS
By Benjamin Dray
Located in New York, NY
COLOUR BANDS 44" x 44" $10,000 About the Series: For Dray, Philosophy deals in the abstract and abstraction is an indispensable tool in art and culture. Through his paintings, he reasserts that abstraction has been a part of humanity, all cultures in all ages. It’s an indispensable tool, as we create symbols, vessels to fill with allusions and messages. The resulting artwork have a strong sense of purpose. Each painting contains hundreds of hand coloured trapezoid shapes, hand drawn with a sharp blade onto silver or gold leaf. Each coloured shape can be interpreted to represent an ‘atomic’ element. On its own a block of colour is insignificant but seen as part of a whole it becomes dynamic and alive reflecting on how nature works. The phenomena of light is also important to the work. The light of the sun in a room illuminates and reflects off the paintings as they come alive and change through time. About the Artist: Benjamin Dray...

Echoes Lead You Through
By Thomas Paul Raggio
Located in New York, NY
Abstract. Vibrant. Painting. About the Artist: "I contemplate every color, mark, and placement of the line to formulate what I call rhythmic velocities: relationships of color and motion that give life to the composition, creating a heartbeat. I am interested in the duality of math and design: through repetition, a line made of color becomes a rhythmic pattern. This concept is found when composing music, organic landscapes and architectural structures. By referencing these sources, my abstractions transcend their formal components, reaching beyond a minimalist canon. My work is composed of hard edges and thin lines set against an abstract field or a pictorial space. Each color has a quickness that is relative to the colors surrounding it; this gives my paintings visual movement and dislocates the viewer. Through linear and geometric forms, my paintings explore design and mathematical concepts found broadly throughout culture. They are improvised from a wide range of sources such as my conversations with scholars in various fields of music, architecture and engineering, my life experiences and travels."
