A fantasy is something you imagine, In a fantasy world, you're not worrying much about reality "” pleasant, maybe, but not very practical. Fantasy is dreams and imagination but so fun to explore. After mixing, blending, scraping, brushing, and painting for 30+ years, I know who I am and what I can do. I trust the process, and experimentation and perhaps, change is a big part of it, so I like being unscripted and going with the flow of the unplanned. And yet some projects require learned lessons, learned skills, planning and preparation. The variety of materials I have available to put on my surfaces is so exciting, however in this painting I chose only oil. It has taken many months to dry and the texture is thick and painterly. I enjoy developing a variety of styles, techniques and layers. When it all comes together it is more than a "Fantasy." It becomes a real world to explore. "Make it beautiful and cherish the moment." Cheryl Johnson
Cheryl Johnson was born on February 12, 1947, in Kellogg, Idaho. She is a painter who explores the connection between realism and abstraction, balancing bold gestural art with sensitive expression. Johnson completed her BA in 1969 at Oral Roberts University, Tulsa. Resonating with Abstract Expressionists, her non-objective and figurative early works transitioned into abstract representational themes. Johnson’s work is inspired by world travels as well as the landscape and cultures of her homes in North Carolina, Hawaii and her Idaho birthplace as well as her Finnish heritage.
Johnson's transcendent eye propels her to explore the emotions of the place. As a strong environmental awareness advocate, her canvases are often inspired by nature and resonate with a deftly modulated palette of translucent and opaque colors. Light hues bleed into darks with a sense of expressive, fluid movement and reflect the harmony and tenacity of the natural world. Johnson’s studios are in Charlotte, North Carolina and Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii.
