Painting: Oil, Latex and Acrylics on Other. Fall in the Carolinas and creative inspiration is everywhere. Everyone is out walking and the air is crisp. This work is an experiment in texture. Using Erosion Cloth covered with grout, and then painted with fat over lean principles of latex and acrylic underpainting and completed with oils using palette knife and brush. Cheryl Johnson
Cheryl Johnson was born on February 12, 1947, in Kellogg, Idaho. She is a painter who explores the connection between realism and abstraction, balancing bold gestural art with sensitive expression. Johnson completed her BA in 1969 at Oral Roberts University, Tulsa. Resonating with Abstract Expressionists, her non-objective and figurative early works transitioned into abstract representational themes. Johnson’s work is inspired by world travels as well as the landscape and cultures of her homes in North Carolina, Hawaii and her Idaho birthplace as well as her Finnish heritage.
Johnson's transcendent eye propels her to explore the emotions of the place. As a strong environmental awareness advocate, her canvases are often inspired by nature and resonate with a deftly modulated palette of translucent and opaque colors. Light hues bleed into darks with a sense of expressive, fluid movement and reflect the harmony and tenacity of the natural world. Johnson’s studios are in Charlotte, North Carolina and Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii.
