I have always had a love affair with Joan Mitchell and this is the second painting where I emulated her style. What a joy to simply use energy to paint. Joan Mitchell is known for the compositional rhythms, bold coloration, and sweeping gestural brushstrokes of her large and often multi-paneled paintings. Inspired by landscape, nature, and poetry, her intent was not to create a recognizable image but to convey emotions. This painting was inspired by Joan Mitchell. Cheryl Johnson
Cheryl Johnson was born on February 12, 1947, in Kellogg, Idaho. She is a painter who explores the connection between realism and abstraction, balancing bold gestural art with sensitive expression. Johnson completed her BA in 1969 at Oral Roberts University, Tulsa. Resonating with Abstract Expressionists, her non-objective and figurative early works transitioned into abstract representational themes. Johnson’s work is inspired by world travels as well as the landscape and cultures of her homes in North Carolina, Hawaii and her Idaho birthplace as well as her Finnish heritage.
Johnson's transcendent eye propels her to explore the emotions of the place. As a strong environmental awareness advocate, her canvases are often inspired by nature and resonate with a deftly modulated palette of translucent and opaque colors. Light hues bleed into darks with a sense of expressive, fluid movement and reflect the harmony and tenacity of the natural world. Johnson’s studios are in Charlotte, North Carolina and Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii.
