About the Item

A luminous 60 x 60 inch abstract painting by contemporary artist Chris Brandell. This mixed-media canvas radiates atmosphere and movement, with layers of soft whites, warm neutrals, and expressive swaths of blue that suggest sky and shifting light. Energetic mark-making, textured brushwork, and delicate graphite lines bring both structure and spontaneity to the composition, creating a balance between openness and depth. Brandell’s paintings are celebrated for their quiet emotional resonance, capturing fleeting impressions of memory, landscape, and light. When the Sun Comes Down, That’s When We Look Up embodies her poetic minimalism, making it an ideal statement piece for collectors seeking large-scale contemporary abstractions that blend serenity with expressive gesture. Chris Brandell abstract painting, large blue contemporary artwork, 60x60 modern abstraction, serene atmospheric art, minimalist painting, collectible contemporary artist, statement abstract canvas. The artist says: While I continue to be inspired by real, tactile items such as plaster, wire, and concrete, in this new work, I explored how I integrate in each piece the peaceful and edgy sides of my nature, and thus my different mark making processes which support those qualities. The nature of this exploration was personal, resulting in multiple inflection points within the range which signified moments of discovery. Some pieces are less textured than others while I struggled to let go of my prior process norms; some pieces added in new materials and tools to step into uncharted, even risky, experiences; and several pieces display words that harken to and lean heavily on my spirituality calling my peace back to the forefront. From the artist: I was excited to be on my quest, but the studio days were exhausting because of what I was letting rise to the surface. A quote by Rick Rubin sums up the body of work nicely: “Our opportunity is to practice. And what wants to happen, will happen”. The exploration exposed vulnerability which expanded the work in ways I couldn’t have predicted. The common result across the broad range of paintings is more intuitive marks while still retaining a minimal quality that resonates with who I am and the found objects that inspire me. I hope viewers will find connecting points throughout the paintings which inspire, facilitate, and honor their own authentic explorations. Born and raised in New Rochelle, New York, Chris evolved her work over the past two decades in her private studio in Vienna, Virginia. Her minimal abstract compositions - inspired by her consumption and study of random words and writing, music and lyrics, and deep meditation - explore powerful memories, visceral experiences and personal authenticity. Reflective of her edgy compositions, she applies mixed media in often non-conventional ways giving rise to compelling negative spaces, line work and oil color. Chris’ work has produced a variety of series over the years, all with the common thread of providing evocative moments to her viewers.

The Way it Was by Susan Thornbury, Contemporary Artwork on Panel
Located in Atlanta, GA
'The Way It Was' by Susan Thornbury is an abstract composition full of texture and movement rendered in mixed media on panel. Measuring 36 x 36 in, this piece showcases the artist's distinctive style and command of composition. A perfect addition for collectors seeking contemporary abstracts with presence and personality. Susan Thornbury creates richly layered mixed media paintings that feel both modern and timeless. Working on wood panels with plaster and wax, she builds surfaces that are as much about what’s revealed as what’s concealed. Her compositions often begin with structure—repeating motifs inspired by antique textiles, vintage wallpaper, or family heirlooms—then soften and evolve through an intuitive, hands-on process of scraping, sanding, and waxing. The result is work that feels quiet but deeply tactile, inviting viewers to linger and discover the nuance within every petal, line, and edge. A background in graphic design shapes Susan’s sensibility: there’s a balance between pattern and spontaneity, symmetry and imperfection. Whether working in soft sage greens, misty grays, or whispery whites, she leans into the beauty of restraint, letting texture and subtle shifts in color carry the emotion. Susan lives and works in Atlanta, where she shares a home with her husband, two daughters, and their spunky rat terrier...
