About the Item
A large scale contemporary Abstract Expressionist acrylic on canvas by French artist Christian Manoury. Signed to the reverse.
A beautiful painting of contrasting light and dark, grounded in the deepest blues yet ethereal at times when brushstrokes thin as glass allow an otherworldly light to pass through. Manoury has an uncanny ability to capture light within his gorgeous colours and yet at the same time allows the light through giving an airy quality to his work. A moment captured in time, a flurry of notes in a piece of music, a passing cloud.
Born in Paris, Manoury studied Fine Art at the Grande Chaumière, Paris and had his first show at Galerie Audouin, St Germain, Paris.
He spent the '80s and '90s working as a free-lance fashion designer for various luxury brands and travelling worldwide. Christian has always been interested in Art with a particular fascination for African and Papua New Guinean Tribal Art and has built up an important collection over the years. He has also contributed to various prestigious collections.
In 1994 Christian spent time as a full-time artist/painter in the Hamptons, under the wing of Larry Rivers.
This was followed by a period of designing furniture and more fashion, but Christian has always kept a studio wherever he lived (New York/Paris/London/Spain..) and enjoys painting whenever time allows. Today he paints full-time in the South of France where he now resides.

Where the first paintings were figurative and subjective, searching for the meaning of being and the origin, his latest work is more impressionistic and minimalist.

Numbers of colour fields in muted shades jostle against one another. It is the shapes and the space between them which give energy to the painting whilst the colour palette restrains.
