About the Item
Interesting abstract of a stillife of oranges by the American artist, Clifford Johnson. Signed lower left. Titled verso. Condition is excellent. Circa 1970. Presently unframed. Provenance: Estate of the artist Clifford Johnson.
Born on a "peach ranch" in Colorado in 1921, Johnson moved to Manhattan in 1947 after his World War II Army hitch. He had already been drawing for some time when he began studying painting and sculpture at Columbia University, where he eventually earned undergraduate and master's degrees.
The earliest work -- when Johnson was young and still feeling his way around -- is figurative and careful. Afterward, when he became interested in classical mythology, Greek gods and symbols made their way into his vocabulary.
Later, having moved into abstraction, he became absorbed in the idea of "weightless" drawings and paintings, and went so far as to affix paintings to the ceiling, where they defy gravity.
