Cynthia Knapp is an abstract artist whose paintings and works on paper are musings on the inter-relationships of organic structures. Fields of color blur, overlap, and interact creating an amalgam of natural shapes, not through representation or expression, but rather in portraying the essence of abstraction as seen in the physical environment.
“There is a visual dialog, a mediation between seemingly autonomous forms, which is constantly in play,” says Cynthia. “This intercession happens while constructing and editing visual elements into a symbiotic balance. Form is absolutely defined and dependent on the visual space that surrounds it. Line gestures mark an essence of motion because of the spatial displacement around that movement. Color, texture, and translucence are enhanced by the surrounding absence of that quality, making it more evident.”
At times, the work references topography, rock formations, or repetitious natural patterning. Paint and glaze are layered, added, and removed until the forms develop on the painting surface. Line and color can wrest dimensionality from the flat surface of paper or canvas. The linear references sometimes define the edge of a form or pose a topographic contour to suggest its volume.
Ongoing concerns of the work are expressed in formal and thematic dichotomies seeking
reconciliation: line and color, flatness and dimensionality, abstract form and ground, tension and calm, conflict and resolution, order, and chaos. These notions are vital in the painting process. With the inspection of these opposites, visual editing is constantly in play as the painting emerges.
Born in Orange, New Jersey, Cynthia spent her childhood in Canada. After completing her education at York University with an Honors BA in Fine Arts in 1974, she returned to the United States. Currently living in Peachtree City, Cynthia has worked for most of her professional life in the Atlanta area.

Cynthia Knapp
Atlanta based artist, Cynthia Knapp was born in the Northeast United States and as a child, she emigrated to Canada. After completing a BA degree with Honors in Fine Arts at York University in Toronto, her career choices led her back to the States, working as a gallerist and setting up a studio. Knapp has continued a professional visual art career based in Atlanta for over 40 years. She is inspired by the works of Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler and Grace Hartigan. Her paintings and works on paper are musings on the interdependent relationship of natural forms. Fields of a color blur, overlap and interact creating an amalgam of natural shapes, not through representation or expression but rather in portraying the essence of abstraction as seen in the physical environment. At times, the work references topography, rock formations or repetitious natural patterning. Paint and glaze are layered, added and removed until the forms develop on the painting surface. Atlanta-based artist, Evan Blackwell Helgeson’s recent body of work “I Know The Place,” is rooted in the exploration & abstraction of nature, combining the representational with the metaphorical & intangible experience of varied landscapes. Her mark-making aims to express the complex compounded layering of experience as we process varying circumstances, emotions & memories while in nature. “I Know The Place” explores the dichotomy & simultaneity of the cycles of nature & lived experience: as new things bloom, something is decaying; as new terrain is explored, a yearning for home grows.
Travel in recent years to the Pacific Northwest & Hawaii have deeply influenced Evan’s work, & have come to intertwine with the layered marks & known gestures that express her own home. It has provided a unique contrast to these known environments & subsequent mark making, drawing unique parallels to the way we compile experiences that create our complex perspectives; interweaving memory & possibility to create new paths forward.
"Traveling from the dense layers of the treeline where horizons are hidden, a desire to find a path out begins to grow," says Evan. "Similarly, the wide expanse & monolithic scale of the coastline displays the fullness of the horizon & the dizzying implication of new possibilities & the unknown. One does not negate the other, but rather they inform each other, recalling the cycle of being drawn out into new terrain, & receding deep into the comfort of home.
