David Collins
The Calendar, Bright Blue, Yellow, Mint Kelly Green Geometric Abstract Shapes

2022

About the Item

Geometric shapes in luminous Kelly green, yellow, dark yellow, cobalt blue, ivory and a black and white floral pattern are vibrant against a mottled midnight blue background. The angles and soft gradation of color in the layered shapes suggest a sense of weightlessness, flight and movement. Signed, dated and titled on verso. By layering geometric planes and simple patterns on fields of rich color, David Collins conveys depth, movement, and a shifting sense of place using the formal elements of painting. In his paintings, structures develop suggesting folded paper, fragments of wings, domestic dwellings or industrial buildings. These images are drawn from childhood recollections of homes, construction sites in 1970s Dallas and from time spent in airplane hangars while visiting his father’s workplace. Planes of color crop up to create floors, wall-like surfaces, eaves and overhangs; silhouettes evoke cranes, cables and overpasses. Ultimately, these architectural notions do not remain whole, they fracture and fall away to reveal other chambers or the outside world. A simultaneity of interior and exterior space describes the liminal in-between. This falling away of form opens up the paintings to a dynamic landscape with a sense of forces moving in many directions at once. Collins' paintings reveal internal structure and order amidst chaos. Despite the shifting and multitudinous spaces, the paintings find resolution, achieving balance and stillness. Collins earned an BFA in painting from Rhode Island School of Design. He is a two-time recipient of the Yaddo Fellowship. His work has been featured in The New York Times and Dallas Art News. Collins work is in numerous private and corporate collections.

  • Primrosegrey, Beige, Orange, Gray Blue, Yellow Stripes Geometric Abstract
    By Elizabeth Gourlay
    Located in Kent, CT
Clean and precise, carefully ordered stripes and blocks of color in orange, gray blue, pale yellow, blue and brown are lively and vibrant against the soft beige background. Signed, dated and titled on verso. Elizabeth Gourlay’s work is a meditation on color and form, a gradual yet progressive analysis leading to a complex vocabulary of shapes, color and line. Musical composition, emotional states and our collective subconscious resonate within bars, lines and blocks of color. The abstract forms emerge, layer and shift in precisely ordered, carefully composed rhythms. Gourlay's artwork is a contemplation of the elements that make color in reduced forms come to life: size, flatness, relation to its edges, and how the presence of other colors affect how it is perceived. Gourlay drew inspiration from shapes found in everyday life and in her studio. The observed shapes either remain as they are or become simplified to their essential geometric elements. Subtleties in color, area, edge or orientation are the catalyst for emotive responses. Palette is minimized; the artist rarely used a wide palette within one work. Rather, a broad range of colors are explored and then reduced. Gourlay investigates color properties: complementary or analogous color, value, saturation and color harmony vs. color anomaly. Elizabeth’s Gourlay’s work has been shown extensively throughout the United States. The artist was the recipient of numerous residencies, fellowships and awards including Artist in Residence at the studio of Sol LeWitt in Spoleto, Italy. Gourlay’s work has been written about in The New Criterion, Painters’ Table and Gorky’s Granddaughter, to name a few. Gourlay earned her MFA at Yale University School of Art, New Haven, CT, and her BA from Edinburgh...
