David Einstein
Wabi Sabi Gestures

2012

About the Item

David Einstein's gestural abstraction has a semiotic quality to it. It is a study of how meaning is created, not what is. Indeed, the artist calls himself "a mark maker," as much as a painter. His work is influenced by Japanese calligraphy as well as Hebrew script. The chief curator of the Triton Museum, where he had a 50-year retrospective in 2018, calls him "one of the foremost Color Field and gesture painters of our time." Born in 1946, Einstein's work, like that of other minimalist painters, rejects Abstract Expressionism's emphasis on the assertive, even aggressive act of painting in which the art is all about the autobiographical self. Rather than looking to find his self in his paintings, he is searching to dissolve the self into something larger. While at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine in 1969, he met and studied with Kenneth Noland, Jacob Lawrence and Brice Marden. Marden was particularly influential on Einstein. It was after his encounter with Marden that he began his life-long engagement with Color Field painting. Einstein has had numerous solo and group exhibitions, including one at Lawrence Fine Art in 2015. He has been on a tear as of late, with acquisitions by the Crocker Museum, Denver Museum, Newark Museum, Reno Museum, Palm Springs Museum, and the Albuquerque Museum. He was the subject of a 50-year retrospective at the Triton Museum in 2018.

  • Gavenium
    By Amaranth Ehrenhalt
    Located in Lawrence, NY
One of the "Women of Abstract Expressionism" On very stiff construction paper Caradoc Ehrenhalt would often accompany his mother, the artist Amaranth Ehrenhalt, on her visits to the Louvre in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. She enjoyed taking a close-up look at the works, many of which were by artists she had known personally. Mr. Ehrenhalt loved those trips. The museum guards not so much. "She would get very close to the art and point out details and techniques, her finger getting close," her son said. The guards would rush over and issue the don't touch warning." Amaranth Ehrenhalt was a multifaceted artist best known for her paintings. She was part of the second generation of Abstract Expressionists, working first in New York in the early 1950s, and then in Paris for much of the rest of her career. Never afraid to experiment, Ehrenhalt's work may best be described as bold, even aggressive, in execution, composition and even color. She worked across media, including oils, works on paper, prints and etchings, tapestry, design and sculpture. Amaranth Ehrenhalt died on March 16, 2021 in Manhattan. She was 93. The cause was Covid-19. Ehrenhalt moved to Paris early in her career and settled there as an expatriate artist for the next forty-odd years. Le Select Cafe was the place where artists and cognoscenti met. There Ehrenhalt met Beauford Delaney and Yves Klein (for whom she bought baby...
