About the Item
Achilles at the Gates of Hell is a contemporary abstract oil painting by David Richardson, part of his Trojan War series, inspired by the Iliad. Achilles was a Greek hero who was slain with an arrow in his heel (his only vulnerable spot) by Paris, a Trojan prince. In Dante’s Inferno, Achilles resides in the Second Circle of Hell (Lust). The painting portrays somberness and great power due to the sheer size of the piece. There is a semblance of a door shape at the top center of the painting... as if the viewer is Achilles standing at the mighty gates of the underworld.
Artist Biography:
David Richardson is from Waterford, Michigan. He was taught to draw and paint by his mother, an artist and art teacher. Richardson studied biology and art while attending Harding College in Searcy, Arkansas. His primary medium is oil, and he also works in acrylic and metal. Richardson became a Colonel during his time in the US Marine Corps, an experience he draws inspiration from to create his artwork. He also marries images from the epics of Homer into his work, creating truly haunting abstracts.
Colonel David Richardson was born in Michigan and is currently based in Arlington, VA. He was taught to paint by his mother, an artist and teacher, in his youth. Richardson draws inspiration from his experience in the US Marine Corps and Homer's Iliad to create his works. A master of oil painting, Richardson also works in acrylic and metal.
