Deb Covell, Submerged Square 1 to 3, acrylic paint, Suprematism

2014

About the Item

Deb Covell's practice is concerned with bringing a form into being by exploring the material and conceptual potential of paint. She uses an extremely reductive methodology, free from visual noise, mimicry and pictorial illusion and retains only what is absolute and essential. Behind the apparent visual simplicity of her work there is a lengthy and rigorous process involved which is characterised by scrutiny and alteration. Each piece reveals some of the physical and cerebral actions and decisions that have taken place throughout the making process and is made evident by the residual clues left behind. She produces painted forms off the surface of a canvas, arriving at these forms by employing both a systematic and arbitrary approach that reaches completion when the work becomes itself. Dense layers of acrylic paint are applied onto stretched plastic sheets which are then peeled off to create a support. This is followed by black and white diagonal bands being painted randomly and quickly onto these supports setting up spacial depth and a dynamic energy within the paintings. Eventually a slowed down considered approach is adopted until the diagonal gives way to the parallel and a balanced equilibrium is reached within each painting. A process of folding , creasing , cutting and collapsing follows until a sculptural form emerges. Key references include early 20th century abstraction, particularity the reductive, geometric language of Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doseberg and the Russian Suprematists. Deb Covell (b.1966, Stockton on Tees) lives and works in Teesside. She received her BA in Fine Art from Liverpool Polytechnic (1989) and her MA in Fine Art from University of East London (2002). Recent exhibitions include Bauhaus Babies, ODETTA, Brooklyn, NY (2016): Here And Now, OBJECT / A, Manchester ,UK (2016): Real Lines, Gray Contemporary, Houston, Texas ,USA.
