Cleve Gray
Cleve Gray was an American Abstract Expressionist painter. He was born on September 22, 1918, in New York. His works are displayed in various museums including, The Brooklyn Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Smithsonian Institute, The Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, The Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and The Phillips Collection. Gray died on December 8, 2004, in Hartford.

The resulting paintings illustrate a synthesis of western and eastern art historical conventions as Gray infused the radical sensibilities of Abstract Expressionism with Zen quietude. Also on view are a selection of hanging scrolls collected by the artist during his visits to China and Japan. These scrolls, which highlight a meditative approach, also contain an intensity and immediacy of action that Gray sought in his own work.
