Dennis Alter's layered and textured oil on canvas paintings abstract expressionist drip paintings in the style of Jackson Pollock are rich with painterly activity. Gestural brushwork, heavy impasto, and layers upon layers of color lend a complexity to each work that invites multiple approaches to viewing. Alter's experimental use of painting tools and techniques -- scraping, carving, impressing, dripping -- play an important role in the process of discovery. He describes this effect in "Betelgeuse":
"Lines and Drips have a life of their own, traveling across and around the canvas.
Each one leading a life both singular and part of a larger community.
Their color and path defining them, their context expressing them.
By dripping, I create more intimacy as an artist, as there's nothing between the surface and me but the dancing of the marks as they strike and enrich the canvas. " - Dennis Alter
