Dora Maar è lo pseudonimo di Henrietta Theodora Markovitch (Parigi 1907 - 1997).
Avvolta nell'ombra monumentale di Picasso, è stata a lungo - e riduttivamente - conosciuta come la sua amante e musa, famosa come la Donna che piange, soggetto di una serie di dipinti di Picasso che la immortalano nella sua fragilità.
Ma Dora Maar era molto più di questo: una pittrice e fotografa di grande talento, poetessa, intellettuale politicamente impegnata e attiva nelle avanguardie artistiche parigine degli anni '30.
Nel 1995 è stata allestita a Valencia la prima grande retrospettiva di fotografie e dipinti (Fundación Bancaixa), ma il suo lavoro è stato riscoperto e rivalutato solo dopo la sua morte.
Nel 2006, la sua casa (la Dora Maar House) a Ménerbes è stata aperta come rifugio per scrittori, studiosi e artisti come parte di un programma gestito dal Museum of Fine Arts di Houston. Numerose sono le pubblicazioni a lei dedicate, così come le sue mostre.
