About the Item
Assemblage No.03 is an abstract piece by contemporary German artist Doris Marten, part of her Sound and Vision series.
Oil on vinyl mounted on Alu-Dibond, diameter: 60 cm (23.6 in). This artwork is a unique creation, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
Using only lines, Doris Marten delves into the perception of colors and how they interact with one another. The lines allow the colors to emerge individually, highlighting the impact one color has on another. With a deep understanding of color, the artist creates optical illusions, evoking movement and intense variations of light. Time, in her view, becomes a crucial element in the creative process, playing an essential role in the development of each piece.
In this latest Sound and Vision series, the line remains the sole motif, but it is now presented on a new medium, a vinyl disc. By painting on a turntable, the artist transforms these acoustic objects into visual elements, as though the musical compositions are replayed through brushstrokes, translating sound into image. Each work is carefully crafted, with a continuous search for balance between line, color, and rhythm. These paintings form an alphabet from which Doris Marten draws inspiration for creating various installations and collections.
The Sound and Vision series was showcased at the exhibition Every Choice is a Change in the basement of the German company and contemporary art patron, Westdeutsche Lotterie GmbH. For more information on this exhibition, click here.
In 2022, the historic Rammelsberg mine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site near the town of Goslar in Lower Saxony, Germany, displayed a four-part installation from the Sound and Vision series. Hundreds of works from the series adorned the steel walls of the former ore processing plant, transforming the site into a visual spectacle. Each piece acts as a color and tone value within the larger composition, similar to how a musical chord fits into a concert. Many of these works were created specifically for the exhibition, with the colors of the sulfate mineral deposits at Rammelsberg inspiring Doris Marten’s new editions, featuring shades such as blue and green vitriol, white, and orange.

Doris Marten
Doris Marten’s paintings explore the perception of colours and their mutual influence, immersing the viewer in an abstract geometric world. She uses lines that reveal colours individually and bring to life the effects of their juxtapositions. The artist has developed a thorough knowledge of colours which allows her to create optical illusions, impressions of movement and intense variations of light. From the beginning of the 2000’s, her work has been regularly exhibited in Germany and elsewhere in the world (United States, Europe). Two of her works have been included in the German Bundestag collection. “Time is a material that is necessary to create my paintings. Line by line, they are created in a concentrated process that has much in common with the activity of writing or even telling a story.’’

In the middle of the road, 2017
oil on canvas over panel
48 x 48 x 1.75 inches
For over two decades, Dana Frankfort has explored the vexing periphery between language and sight by painting words. Rather than laying claim to the paintings, controlling their semiotic pulse, her words serve as the formal armature; they prop up, ventilate, and allow the many layers of paint to breathe. Imperatives, allusions, evocations—the words dissolve into a palimpsest of obscured serifs and stems, into color and form.
The title of the work is a phrase from a poem by Carlos Drummond de
Andrade’s “In the Middle of Road.” Here it is, translated from the Portuguese by Elizabeth Bishop...
