Layer No.14 is an abstract painting by contemporary German artist Doris Marten. It is made with Indian ink on Alu-Dibond and measures 45 × 45 cm (17.7 × 17.7 in).
The Layers series oscillates between two-dimensional image and three-dimensional object, questioning the very notion of illusion through painted lines. Although the artist restricts herself to just seven colours, their careful juxtaposition generates the perception of many more. In some works, the colours and geometric forms (the “layers”) exist as tangible objects; in others, their interplay creates the illusion of depth and spatiality.
Through the seemingly simple device of the line, Doris Marten investigates the perception of colour and the ways hues influence one another. Each line isolates a colour, while simultaneously animating the effects it produces when placed in relation to others. Her deep understanding of colour enables her to construct optical illusions, impressions of movement, and striking variations of light. For Marten, time itself becomes a material—an essential component in the unfolding of each work during the creative process.

Doris Marten
Doris Marten’s paintings explore the perception of colours and their mutual influence, immersing the viewer in an abstract geometric world. She uses lines that reveal colours individually and bring to life the effects of their juxtapositions. The artist has developed a thorough knowledge of colours which allows her to create optical illusions, impressions of movement and intense variations of light. From the beginning of the 2000’s, her work has been regularly exhibited in Germany and elsewhere in the world (United States, Europe). Two of her works have been included in the German Bundestag collection. “Time is a material that is necessary to create my paintings. Line by line, they are created in a concentrated process that has much in common with the activity of writing or even telling a story.’’
