About the Item
SOUND AND VISION – Budgies is a unique oil on vinyl installation by German contemporary artist Doris Marten, dimensions are 100 × 100 cm (39.4 × 39.4 in). Every piece is 30 cm in diameter (11.8 in).
The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
The collector has the option to purchase just a part of the installation, with a minimum of 9 pieces, although the entire installation consists of 15 pieces. The way the various components of the installation are put together is an artistic statement; each piece was thoughtfully chosen by Doris Marten to establish a particular balance, so it cannot be easily changed. The artist must suggest a new composition if a piece is altered. She compares this to a piece of music, saying that while you can listen to sections of the entire composition, it becomes unrecognisable if the individual notes are mixed together.
This artwork is part of the series Sound and Vision, the line remains the only motif of the compositions, but it is illustrated on a new medium which is none other than a vinyl disk. In painting on a turntable, the artist transformed these acoustic data carriers into visual aids: as if the musical pieces are replayed with a brush, in a sort of transformation of sound into image.
With the simple use of lines Doris Marten explores the perception of colours and their influence on each other. Line reveal colours individually and they bring to life the effect of one colour upon another. The artist has developed a thorough knowledge of colours which allows her to create optical illusions, impressions of movement and intense variations of light.

Doris Marten
Doris Marten’s paintings explore the perception of colours and their mutual influence, immersing the viewer in an abstract geometric world. She uses lines that reveal colours individually and bring to life the effects of their juxtapositions. The artist has developed a thorough knowledge of colours which allows her to create optical illusions, impressions of movement and intense variations of light. From the beginning of the 2000’s, her work has been regularly exhibited in Germany and elsewhere in the world (United States, Europe). Two of her works have been included in the German Bundestag collection. “Time is a material that is necessary to create my paintings. Line by line, they are created in a concentrated process that has much in common with the activity of writing or even telling a story.’’
