Doris Marten
SOUND AND VISION – White Quartet by Doris Marten - Installation, black & white

2023

About the Item

SOUND AND VISION – White Quartett is a unique oil on vinyl installation by German contemporary artist Doris Marten, dimensions are 65 × 65 cm (25.6 × 25.6 in). Every piece is 30 cm in diameter (11.8 in). The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity. This installation consists of 4 pieces. The way the various components of the installation are put together is an artistic statement; each piece was thoughtfully chosen by Doris Marten to establish a particular balance, so it cannot be easily changed. The artist must suggest a new composition if a piece is altered. She compares this to a piece of music, saying that while you can listen to sections of the entire composition, it becomes unrecognisable if the individual notes are mixed together. This artwork is part of the series Sound and Vision, the line remains the only motif of the compositions, but it is illustrated on a new medium which is none other than a vinyl disk. In painting on a turntable, the artist transformed these acoustic data carriers into visual aids: as if the musical pieces are replayed with a brush, in a sort of transformation of sound into image.  With the simple use of lines Doris Marten explores the perception of colours and their influence on each other. Line reveal colours individually and they bring to life the effect of one colour upon another. The artist has developed a thorough knowledge of colours which allows her to create optical illusions, impressions of movement and intense variations of light.

Everything is Early (Colorful Autumn colors Large Abstract Oil painting, Nature)
By Richmond Burton
Located in Cody, WY
Richmond Burton’s works are known for their kaleidoscopic color, undulating patterns, and lyrical handling of expressionistic mark making. His Visceral, seductive, and organic compositions play with decorative patterning without compromising a conceptual backbone. Their intensity of vision allows for transcendent thought, experience, and connection while challenging any preconceived norms or rules defining abstract painting. “Structure is never absent; it’s just uninsistent, even accidental. The paintings are built up in stages, but never give the impression of being hard-worked. They have a fluid, textural presence, like luxury fabrics printed with overlapping, off-register layers of patterning.” — Holland Cotter, The New York Times (1999). Richmond Burton (b. 1960, Talladega, AL) obtained a BA in architecture from Rice University Houston, TX (1984). He lives and works in Woodstock, NY. Burton has shown extensively both domestically and internationally and has work in the collections of The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL; The Broad, Los Angeles, CA; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, TX; Fogg Museum at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, NY; and National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, among others. Recent solo exhibitions include venues such as Sarah Moody Gallery of Art at University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL (2015); Silas Marder Gallery, Bridgehampton, NY (2014); Philip Slein Gallery, St. Louis, MO (2013); and George Lawson...
