Edward Avedisian
Untitled 303 (Vertical Mid-Century Modern Abstract Painting in Red & Orange)

c. 1971

About

Abstract, mid century modern style painting on paper in red, orange, yellow and black acrylic on thick paper, 32 x 23 inches unframed This vertical, medium-sized abstract acrylic painting was painted by Edward Avedisian around 1971. Glossy acrylic paint in vibrant hues of red, orange, black, and hints of yellow, white, pink, and brown are thickly applied to paper, leaving a textured surface where layers of paints are evident. Horizontal and vertical lines are applied in thick, broad brushstrokes while splatters and drips of paint also decorate the composition. The artist left the work unframed with two holes at the left and right corners for hanging. The abstract expressionist painting pairs perfectly with any decor, especially a mid-century modern aesthetic. About the artist: In the 1960’s, Edward Avedisian was one of the youngest of those luminaries producing a grand new abstract painting. Shown first at Ivan Karp and Dick Bellamy’s Hansa Gallery and then at Robert Elkon, Avedisian’s insouciant mix of pop playfulness, color field cool and high formalist style put his art in a unique, and at the time generously rewarded, position. Paintings made it onto the cover of Artforum, were purchased by all the major museums, were among the few abstract works shown as representative of America’s post-war achievement at Expo 67 in Montreal and comprised a cornerstone in histories of the period written by Barbara Rose, among others. Yet, Avedisian left New York in the mid-1970’s, moving upstate along the Hudson River, severing his exhibition ties. The artist settled in Hudson, NY and committed himself entirely to representational painting. Carrie Haddad Gallery now represents the artist's estate. Celebrating 25 years representing artists of the Hudson Valley and beyond, Carrie Haddad Gallery hosts 7 exhibits a year featuring painting, photography, mixed media and large & small sculpture.
