Primordial Landscape, Signed Original Abstract Oil Painting in Moody Jewel Tones

20th Century

About the Item

This captivating Primordial Landscape oil painting, signed by the artist Edward (Eduardo) Arcenio Chavez (1917-1995), showcases his masterful use of color and form. The abstract composition features rich jewel tones of brown, purple, gold, and green, evoking a sense of deep, organic energy. The painting is presented in a vintage frame with outer dimensions of 19 x 21 ¼ inches, and the image size itself measures 18 x 20 inches. This piece is noted on page 166 of the book A Contested Art: Modernism and Mestizaje in New Mexico, reflecting its importance in the context of New Mexico’s artistic history. Provenance: Estate of Steven P. Norton & Martin R. Harnick About the Artist: Born in 1917 in Wagonmound, New Mexico, Eduardo Chavez was a highly versatile artist known for his work as an illustrator, muralist, genre and landscape painter, sculptor, and lithographer. Chavez studied at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, where he learned under the guidance of noted artists such as Boardman Robinson, Frank Mechau, Arnold Blanch, and Peppino Mangravite. Before his military service during WWII, Chavez painted murals across the western United States. After the war, Chavez and his wife, artist Jenne Magafan, moved to Woodstock, New York, a vibrant artistic hub where many Western and Midwestern artists gathered after WWII. In Woodstock, Chavez flourished alongside other influential artists such as Bruce Currie, Fletcher Martin, and his wife’s sister, Ethel Magafan. The Art Students League reopened a summer school there in 1947, and Chavez became deeply involved in the town’s creative renaissance. Chavez's work is characterized by his bold use of color and composition, drawing inspiration from both Western traditions and the modernist movements of the time. His accolades include a Tiffany Grant (1948), the Fulbright Award (1951), and the Childe Hassam Award (1953). He also held teaching positions at the Art Students League, Colorado College, and Syracuse University, shaping the next generation of artists. WPA Murals: Chavez created murals for several post offices and public buildings, including those in Denver, Colorado, and in Texas, Nebraska, and Colorado. His murals remain an integral part of the New Deal’s legacy. This stunning painting is a rare opportunity to own a significant work by Eduardo Chavez, a key figure in American modernism and the artistic culture of the American Southwest. ©David Cook Galleries, LLC
