About the Item

Derived from photographs of subsistence craters formed in the aftermath of underground atomic tests, in the creation of Hybla Fair Bedrock, from the Bedrock Underground Tests series, I used very specific processes, each step building on the previous one and contributing to the kaleidoscope-like patterns that define this and other works from this series. All test images used in my Bedrock series are from the Nevada Test Site, the primary source of imagery for all of my Underground Test series. Using satellite images from Google Earth, the Hybla Fair crater photograph that I selected was refined and cleaned up, trimming and sharpening elements to focus solely on the crater's essence. Subsequently, this image was again transformed with various computer programs, wherein the kaleidoscopic pattern emerged. Next the resulting pattern was subjected to a contour outline program which provided the final touch, crystallizing the geometric imagery into its definitive form. While the method echoes that of all my previous Underground Test series, the Bedrock collection diverges with its embrace of a circular format, departing from the square footprint of its predecessors. The completed piece was then titled, the name Hybla Fair coming from the designated identifier assigned to the corresponding Bedrock atomic test shot. This specific naming process serves as a reminder of the historical context underpinning the artwork.
