Edward Marecak
The Four Winter Months Semi-Abstract Figure Oil Painting in Red, Black, Orange

1985

About the Item

This striking 1985 oil painting, titled The Four Winter Months, is an original work by Denver modernist Edward Marecak (1919-1993). The piece features four abstract, semi-stylized figures rendered in a dynamic color palette of red, black, green, gray, blue, and orange. Marecak’s signature "referential abstraction" style is evident in the bold, expressive forms and emotional depth of the piece. The painting is signed and dated by the artist on the lower right and titled on the verso. It is presented in a vintage frame, with outer dimensions measuring 24 ½ x 30 ½ x 1 ¼ inches, and an image size of 23 ¾ x 30 inches. Provenance: Estate of the artist, Edward Marecak. About the Artist: Edward Marecak was born in Ohio in 1919 to immigrant parents from the Carpathian region of Slovakia. Growing up in the multi-ethnic neighborhoods of Cleveland, Marecak was deeply influenced by Slavic folk tales and customs, which would later shape his art. He received a full scholarship to the Cleveland Institute of Art, where he studied under the guidance of prominent artists like Henry George Keller. Marecak's artistic journey was interrupted by military service in World War II, after which he studied at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center on the G.I. Bill. He continued his studies with notable instructors, including Jean Charlot and Mary Chenoweth. In 1950, Marecak completed his BFA at the Cleveland Institute of Art and moved to Denver, where he began teaching art in the public school system. Over the next 25 years, he influenced many students through his teaching at various junior high schools. Marecak's early works were influenced by watercolorists like Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent, but after settling in Colorado, he radically changed his style, embracing a unique form of referential abstraction. His first solo show, held in 1949, showcased this new direction. Throughout his career, Marecak produced not only paintings and works on paper but also ceramics, textiles, and even furniture designs, often collaborating with his wife, Donna Fortin, a talented ceramist. A retrospective of his work, which included his wife Donna’s ceramics, was held at the Kirkland Museum in 2007, cementing his legacy in the Colorado art scene.
