About the Item

This vibrant, semi-abstract still life painting titled "Still Life with Masks" was created by Denver artist Edward Marecak in 1983. Executed in bold oil paint on board, the work reflects Marecak's mid-century modern aesthetic, with striking color combinations of pink, orange, red, brown, green, and blue. The composition's energy and use of color embody Marecak's signature style, blending flat patterns with vibrant contrasts. The painting is presented in its original vintage frame, with outer dimensions of 48 ¾ x 28 ¾ x 2 ½ inches and an image size of 48 x 27 inches. Provenance: Estate of the artist, Edward Marecak. About the Artist: Edward Marecak (1919–1993), a prolific Denver-based artist, was deeply committed to teaching and fostering young artists, often prioritizing his role as an educator over the pursuit of fame. This dedication to art education was influenced by his Slovakian immigrant parents, who valued the power of learning. Marecak's diverse body of work includes lithographs, monoprints, drawings, paintings, wood sculptures, stained-glass windows, ceramics, and jewelry. Throughout his life, Marecak remained focused on artistic expression rather than commercial success. Although he exhibited his works, his personal collection was often his most treasured, and he remained largely outside the mainstream art scene. However, recent exhibitions, including a retrospective at the Kirkland Museum in 2007, have positioned Marecak among Colorado's most celebrated modernists. Born in Brunswick, Ohio, Marecak was influenced by the folk tales and magical stories told by his grandmother, which led him to develop an artistic style rooted in Eastern European traditions. This influence freed him from traditional techniques of perspective, allowing him to embrace vibrant, flat patterns and intricate compositions. His works often resemble mosaics or stained-glass windows, with bold shapes and strong outlines that frame areas of intense color. Marecak’s artistic philosophy evolved to embrace a Byzantine-inspired style, with a constant exploration of color and texture. Edward Marecak’s works are held in major collections, and his legacy continues to be celebrated in Colorado's art scene.
