1980s 'Zeus, Venus & Hera' Semi-Abstract Oil Painting, Mythological Figural Art

1982

About the Item

This captivating 1982 oil painting titled 'Zeus, Venus, and Hera' is a stunning example of semi-abstract figurative art by Edward Marecak (1919-1993), a prominent Denver modernist artist. The work features cubist, stylized figures representing gods and goddesses from ancient mythology. Central to the composition is Zeus, the Greek god of the sky, depicted in the nude with rich brown tones, a beard, and piercing blue eyes. He embraces Venus, the Roman goddess of love, and Hera, the Greek goddess of marriage and women. Together, they are seated on a blue-green chair with a striking patterned background. The vibrant color palette includes black, brown, pink, red, yellow, green, blue, and orange, which Marecak masterfully blends to evoke depth and movement. This oil on board piece is signed and dated in the lower left and titled and dated on the verso. While unframed, custom framing options are available for this exceptional work. Provenance This painting is from the Estate of Edward Marecak, reflecting the artist's personal legacy and unique artistic journey. About the Artist – Edward Marecak Edward Marecak, born in Ohio in 1919, became one of Colorado’s most influential modernist artists. Known for his vivid use of color and intricate patterns, Marecak’s work drew inspiration from his Slovak heritage, Greek mythology, and his love for classical music. He studied at prestigious institutions, including the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Cranbrook Academy of Art, and later continued his education through the G.I. Bill at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. Throughout his career, Marecak was known for his innovative approach to painting, blending surrealism, Magic Realism, and modern abstraction. In addition to his paintings, Marecak also created works in textiles, ceramics, and hooked rugs, collaborating with his wife, Donna Fortin, a renowned ceramist. Despite his significant contributions to the art world, Marecak preferred a more private life, exhibiting his work selectively. His pieces are held in prominent museum collections, including the Denver Art Museum and the Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art. Marecak’s mythological themes, combined with his dreamlike style, invite viewers to explore both timeless stories and the artist’s personal interpretations. 'Zeus, Venus, and Hera' stands as a remarkable example of his expressionist use of color and his unique ability to merge classical imagery with modern sensibilities.
