About the Item
This 37.5" x 61.5" oil on canvas painting is by Edwin Carter Weitz. This abstract geometric painting features a composition of overlapping rectangular forms rendered in muted, translucent colors against a predominantly pale blue-gray background. The canvas is dominated by several large rectangular shapes outlined in dark lines, creating a sense of architectural or structural elements floating in space. In the upper portion, there's a distinctive triangular/angular form that transitions from golden yellow on the left to blue on the right. The central area contains elongated horizontal rectangles, one of which features a striking red band/stripe running through its length. Below this, a smaller rectangular form contains what appears to be a thin pink or rose-colored line. The entire composition has a layered, semi-transparent quality, with colors bleeding through and overlapping in subtle ways. The background shows variations in the blue-gray wash, with some areas appearing more saturated than others, and there are faint horizontal lines visible near the bottom of the canvas. The overall effect is one of geometric precision softened by the watercolor-like treatment of the pigments, creating depth and atmospheric quality within the modernist framework.
Edwin Carter Weitz (b. 1963) has been making pictures and exploring visual concepts for nearly four decades, building a body of work that spans a wide range of modes and motifs.
Midway through a successful career in advertising, Weitz shifted his focus to fine art. Drawing on years of experience shaping imagery for some of America’s most influential brands, he brought a designer’s eye and a storyteller’s instinct to the canvas. Painting quickly became his primary mode of expression—one that reveals his full pictorial and technical range more vividly than any other.
“I’ve never been about developing a signature style,” Weitz says. “For me, it’s about developing ideas.” Whether in design, advertising, or art, he’s driven by the same question: What are the limits of an idea—and what happens at the edge?
One of his current bodies of work, The Line Series, is a vivid example. A few years ago, Weitz began working with a deceptively simple motif: a single, continuous line. In each painting, the line enters the canvas, bends at right angles, flows through tonal fields, and exits—only to reappear in the next. It moves through minimalist abstractions, dense geometric zones, and conceptual terrains, forming a continuous narrative across a series of 36" x 60" works. Through it all, the line is the elixir.
Set free to wander, the line never repeats itself. It transforms with each environment, forging motion, connection, and surprise. It’s not just a line—it’s a journey.
