Eleanor Aldrich
LENTICULAR VANISH - textural optical illusion painting using caulk and enamel

2020

About the Item

Excerpt from a review by art critic Joe Nolan: "In these works, Aldrich paints on surfaces that have been covered in uniform vertical strips of caulk. The textures don’t play into the subjects of these paintings so much as create a consistent 3D pattern across the whole surface of a wood panel covered with canvas. Two of the most interesting works in this style give us graphic renderings of domestic interiors laid out in blocks of color and elemental shapes. 'Kitchen Sink' and 'Ironing' depict counters, faucets and ironing boards through a distorted perspective that’s unnervingly deep and narrow, vertiginous and claustrophobic. The caulk brings lots of texture to these works, and Aldrich’s paint appears to be applied in chromatic washes of yellow, pink and blue that seem serene given their off-kilter surroundings. In fact, Aldrich uses the repeating vertical textures to create vividly colored lenticular illusions in these works, which only reveal themselves as viewers move past the paintings. In addition to their formal qualities and their narrative content, Aldrich’s works also comment on traditional gender roles in Western society. Her narrative portraits are mostly inspired by the covers of Nancy Drew novels. Drew, the “girl detective” who first appeared in print as a female counterpart to the Hardy Boys’ detective stories, was independent, strong-willed and adventurous — a genuine action hero for young girls. Aldrich’s portraits capture similarly feisty sleuths in silicone, caulking and enamel paint, which Aldrich applies using grouting tools. In short, the artist uses the kind of traditionally masculine materials and tools you’d find at a hardware store to paint a young feminist hero. The relationship between materials and subjects is repeated in Aldrich’s lenticular domestic scenes, where the trappings and settings of “women’s work” are rendered with “masculine” materials. This thoughtful contrast between subjects and the stuff they’re made of brings a conceptual depth to these works that might be overlooked given their arresting surfaces. Aldrich’s paintings are super stylized, but also smart in substance. And in the five years I’ve been watching her practice evolve, it’s only become more singular."

  • VERSO EQUIVALENCE 1 - acrylic, staples, pine wood, cut linen -Abstract geometric
    By Linda King Ferguson
    Located in Signal Mountain, TN
This painting by Linda King Ferguson is part of her equivalence series, which began as a feminist project; works that subvert the historically male gaze and a material language speaking of gendered concerns. While typically, King Ferguson paints both sides of the canvas and cuts a flap on the the frontside to reveal the color of the back of the canvas, she unexpectedly does the opposite here. The painting is hung from the "frontside" of the canvas, revealing to us the raw edges of her linen canvas, stapled to the stretchers. Two oblong shapes of pink and red dominate the center of the painting. A thin semioval cut has been made inside of both of these shapes. Her color choices first came from Helen Molesworth’s essay, Painting With Ambivalence, published in WACK! Art of the Feminist Revolution. The Essay includes a large reproduction of Mary Heilmann’s 1979 painting...

  • PWW-777 - Eric Mack - Contemporary Abstract Collage Painting Based off the Grid
    Located in Signal Mountain, TN
PWW-777 is part of Eric Mack's ongoing body of work utilizing multi-media, complex compositions, and a grid centered around urban design. Using a grid to create the framework of the painting, Mack has utilized Zerox copies adhered by a matte medium to create graphic imagery of electronics from the 90s, small bits of a map of various places in Germany, and vinyl records. Mack paints on top of a torn canvas, and on the edges you can see the frayed, painted canvas mounted to the white backing of the frame. The work is finished with glass that shows minimum reflection as well as a customized 2 inch, white frame. Eric Mack (b.1976, Charleston) creates mathematically based renderings with a distinct post-modern twist. Works are informed with super imposed grids, patterns, and portals. Layered surfaces are created with paint, found objects, natural fibers, and synthetic substrates that explore the systems of our visual world. His most recent show “Charting the Terrain” is on view now at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles was covered by the Los Angeles Times, KCRW, and LALA Magazine. His last solo exhibition was titled "Impossible Architectures" at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2017. Recent group shows include "Abstract Mind" at the Czong Institute of Contemporary Art, South Korea, "Small Works 2017 at Trestle Gallery, Brooklyn, "Checkered History", Outpost Artist Resources, Brooklyn, N.Y. 2015; Collections include High Museum Atlanta, Ing Investments, Hartsfield Jackson International Airport - Atlanta + Atlanta Gas & Light Co. • Abstract Expressionist Enamel on Metal Color Field Painting Paul Jenkins Style
    By Dom Mingolla
    Located in Surfside, FL
Wall hanging, Framed 16 X 20. Enamel measures 16 X 12 Dominic Mingolla (1922 – 1999) Mingolla created paintings in many different materials and genres. Best known for his large abstract expressionist watercolor paintings similar in style to Paul Jenkins and for his Enamel work. His work bears affinities both to Lyrical Abstraction and to Tachisme artists such as Nicolas de Staël, Serge Poliakoff, Andre Lanskoy, Hans Hartung, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Gustave Singier, Alfred Manessier, Roger Bissiere, "Lyrical Abstraction arose in the 1960s and 70s, following the challenge of Minimalism and Conceptual art. Many artists began moving away from geometric, hard-edge, and minimal styles, toward more lyrical, sensuous, romantic abstractions worked in a loose gestural style. These "lyrical abstractionists" sought to expand the boundaries of abstract painting, and to revive and reinvigorate a painterly 'tradition' in American art. At the same time, these artists sought to reinstate the primacy of line and color as formal elements in works composed according to aesthetic principles – rather than as the visual representation of sociopolitical realities or philosophical theories." "Characterized by intuitive and loose paint handling, spontaneous expression, illusionist space, acrylic staining, process, occasional imagery, and other painterly techniques, the abstract works included in this exhibition sing with rich fluid color and quiet energy. Artists associated with Lyrical Abstraction include: Natvar Bhavsar, Lamar Briggs, Friedel Dzubas, Sam Francis, Ronnie Landfield, Pat Lipsky...
