About

"I think of the work as a meditation on color and form. The drawings and paintings emerge from a gradual yet progressive interaction that leads to a complex network of shifting shapes and colors. The shapes and lines create my own vocabulary of abstract forms. They are resonances with inner emotional states, elements of feelings or sub-conscious thoughts combined with conscious thought about color, form and geomet-ric structure. In this set of works, I am attempting to get in touch with the inner eye, the unconscious mind and let that lead me through the drawing or painting. Usually, my best work happens when this is occurring naturally and I am in tune with the work. I am not consciously thinking about music or musical composition. Yet, when working, it is something that happens naturally in the process of playing with bars, lines and blocks of color. Shifting them around the picture plane is analogous to moving notes and chords around the score. Composing the piece is what is done until something feels right." Elizabeth Gourlay studied painting and received a first Class honors degree from Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland. Then, after a fellowship at the Yale/Norfolk Summer School of Music and Art, Elizabeth went on to receive an MFA in Painting from Yale University School of Art. Elizabeth is the recipient of several grants and fellowships, including two Individual Artist State Grants from the DECD/Connecticut office of the Arts. Elizabeth travelled to paint on the Andrew Grant traveling Scholarship while at Edinburgh College of Art, and had three fellowships at the Vermont Studio Center. At the invitation of Carol LeWitt, she has worked at the Sol LeWitt studio in Spoleto, Italy for several summers. Her work is shown nationally and internationally including at MASS MoCA, The National Academy and School of fine Arts, the Cummings Arts Center at Connecticut College, the Hecksher Museum and the Widener Gallery at Trinity College, and at the Drawing Center NYC. She teaches 2D Design, Color theory and Painting and Abstraction in The School of Continuing Education at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
